Next Nintendo Console May Not Be As "Revolutionary" As The Wii

Gothic Girl | August 01, 2008 | News | Wii Company
In a recent interview with Forbes, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata admitted that the next Nintendo console may not be as "revolutionary" as the Wii.

"It's natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different," Iwata said, "If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it's going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again."
We've often wondered how Nintendo could possibly out-do the Wii in terms of innovation. Now we know the answer to our question is possibly "nothing." Speaking with Forbes on the topic of future consoles, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata admitted it will be difficult to one-up its latest console effort. When asked about the importance of hardware innovation, Iwata explained that "This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can't tell."

"It's natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different," Iwata added, admitting, "If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it's going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again." In the article, Iwata confirms that Nintendo is actively developing its next machine, but seems far more interested in software offerings. "The hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games," he said. Reluctantly, Iwata-san? People are practically buying Wii without knowing what it even does.

maybe they'll actually make something good?
all they need to do is tone down the motion sensor bullshit (not necessarily get rid of it. i still loathe it), and give it a normal controller. game on.

This was always part of Nintendo's cycle of consoles. One system (NES, N64, Wii) will have some kind of brand new control scheme, and the console after (SNES, GCN, "Wii2") has a refining of said control and heightened hardware.

If they're going to go with motion-controls again, I'd love to have the option to turn it off and use it as a regular controller this time around.

There's nothing more annoying than wanting to lay down and hang my arms off the side of the bed, but not being able to do so because the Wiimote needs to face the sensor bar. >_>

And the Wii isn't a real gaming console?

The HD consoles are last gen with a new coat of paint.

There aren't a whole lot of great games and it's very casual.

So by the logic in your second sentence if a company doesn't completely change the way people have to play the games on their console then it's just a fresh coat of paint and nothing else?

I didn't know that gaming was only gaming if it was hardcore gaming . . . Sheesh, even though checkers isn't as "hardcore" as a football game, it's still a game nonetheless and some still enjoy playing the game. I have the Wii and it has some fun games to play. If gaming was only supposed to be serious, hardcore, and have realistic graphics with skill-melting challenges, then I honestly wouldn't game. I game for fun, and that means whatever face fun may put on. (Which is why I have the PS3 and 360 as well--because they are fun too, and have some good hardcore and casual games too.)

The Wii is revolutionary because it's not the "same ol' same ol'" with the controls like the PS3 and 360 are. They introduced something VERY different from the norm.

I think I'd definitely enjoy my Wii more if I could play the games with a real controller!

Everybody should have bought a Classic COntroller while you could. They have the Nunchuk, which is as close as a Controller for the Wii that you can get now.

It's a kick in the gut to have to spend extra money on a brand new controller just so I don't have to use the Wiimote's motion-controls.

The Wii was hardly revolutionary, just did something slightly different and added a new control scheme. If anything its a pain cause it forces you on every game to use it, instead of an option setting of having it on or not, similar to the Sixaxis for the PS3 games that uses it. Most of the PS3 games using that feature has at least a option setting of having it on or not. This is one reason why I love it. It might not be the same, but I prefer lying down playing my games and not swing my arms around like a bird flying. Of course its not exactly like this, more of an exaggeration, still same point.

To a gamer, fapping is nothing slightly different. :/
