Left 4 Dead Playstation 3 Port To Be Done By EA?

tidus04 | August 03, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
In a recent but rather small article by OPM this week it seems like the Xbox 360 and PC title Left 4 Dead will be make its way over to the Playstation 3 but only as a port.. but furthurmore they have claimed that they believe Electronic Arts (who done the Orange Box port...) will be taking up the helm to port it over to us PS3 Users.

Don't we feel so lucky?
The survival-horror themed shooter Left 4 Dead is coming along nicely and is set to hit Xbox 360 and PC platforms on November 4, 2008. Today, we've found out that EA is going to assume the responsibility of porting the FPS to the PlayStation 3 (similarly to the The Orange Box). The scoop comes from a tiny blurb in latest issue of OPM.

It might just be me going mad, but I could have sworn we had an article on this yesterday... which was deleted after it was approved of since it was quite blatantly in the [RUMOUR] section of the Official Playstation Magazine...

I'm not sure, I didn't see any original artical on this and neither did the mod who accepted this /=.. but more then likley we both missed it XD

Either way, according to this EA are confirmed to do the port.

Apparently both people missed it which is unfortunate, the PSX Extreme bit is based off the OPM rumor section, the Endsights bit is based off the OPM rumor section the play.tm link is based off the OPM rumor section, even the Actiontrip link as source is based on the OPM rumor section.

Pretty much all confirmation is based on the rumor section making this *gasp* a rumor. The other article is still in the edit bin because it fails to include the fact that this is a rumor.

Oh well it's the internet and accuracy doesn't seem to be a priority these days.

Actually I was the author of the other article and was well aware this one was the same story. However I couldn't be arsed to change it around to say its a rumor. But I made sure Tidus did, the question mark indicates the rumor

Left 4 Dead - Pressumably good, though I barely heard anything about it.

Port is going to be done by EA - Thanks, but no thanks.

Even though EA is in charge of the port, I may consider picking this game up.

It's a shame EA is doing it but, meh, better than nothing I suppose. >_>

Valve piss me off, seriously what is their deal with the Playstation 3. Can they seriously not be bothered to learn a technology that may be standardin a few years time in all CPU's, i mean to some they are the best in the world yet they can only work with technology they know? Doesn't make sense advancement will come to those that embrace new technology not cast that off to another company.

If you go through their technical archives you will see they have quite a bit of literature on programming for the Cell (The RSX is old technology compared to present GPU architecture) so it is a bit surprising that they don't pursue anything further given the extent of knowledge that their engineers have written about it and any shortcomings they would run into (tiny cache sizes on the spe for example).

They could just be throwing EA a bone though since they don't need actually need them outside of publishing physical media for each game / collection.

If they are Cell-experienced, then the only reason they won't develop for PS3 is because they hate it.

Personally they could find a better company to do it, But I guess EA isn't busy like everyone else. They probably found the worst dev to port it just to spite the PS3.

Left 4 Dead is already hyped. It's got 4 nominations for awards already.

Last I checked, engineers don't make the calls on what they can do. Artists and sound techs don't make that call either. Saying "they" hate it is a bit off, you can see in the writings the people are pretty much happy about anything they get to play with and they study the hardware down to the finer points, although I doubt they'd really disclose the whole thing for the sake of retaining some trade secrets.

I'm pretty sure anyone could do better, it seems that EA just wrapped the code and then added some bare options to it for the Orange Box. Given they do have a standing publishing agreement it's not like they can go back to Vivendi and say "hey you know how we told you to jump in the lake... yeah... can you port and publish this violating our other agreement with EA?" I'm sure there was something there for EA to capitalize on through all this since they have no IP rights to anything Valve makes.

L4D plays well enough to generate hype, the only question is if it can sustain that hype after people start playing it in a mass audience, constantly doing 4 player missions with random people who have the option to revive you if they want or just leave you to sit until they absolutely need a second hand and then unlock the door. The adaptive zombie behavior is always good but I guess the question is where the AI peaks because that will be the marker when things start to slide off.

I highly doubt that the cell will be standard in a few years times.

I mean, people are just starting to get into dual cores and quad cores.

It may not be standard in a few years atleast not as the CELL but the same technology that makes up the CELL may start to be migrated into current AMD, Intel solutions.

The IBM SPE setup isn't planned for use in anything in the next 2-3 years, the focus for business computing is still large cache based processing. Such reason is why you see Intel chips sporting 12MB of cache or more given the amount of data the pipeline is trying to shove through. Right now the focus is on producing more cores per die while retaining equal performance across the silicon.

Their venture after that is bringing the GPU on die with the CPU for Hybrid / Fusion processing. On top of that NVIDIA and ATI are working on open computing based on their GPU technology instead of reinventing the wheel and trying to use something like an array of SPE's since the performance figures from their GPU line has shown to be stunning anyway.

Isn't the Valve team extremely small? Can we really blame them if they choose not to dedicate the time and let EA take care of it?

Why be pissed at Valve when it's EA doing the shitty job? I've seen the very same people bitching about Valve not liking the PS3 proudly state the dude who is making FFXIII Versus an exclusive HATES the 360.

    I don't get it.

People hate EA as well though.

However it just seems odd, and lazy (?) , to develop a game for the PC and 360 and then outsource the PS3 version just because you don't like the platform. Surely developers should want everyone to enjoy their games equally, rather than have one version being substandard.

As for the Versus XIII comment, I don't get what your trying to say ... ?

I'm just saying a select few here are pissy because it's Sony being disliked by a developer and not Microsoft. 'Valve disliking the PS3 but at least letting someone else port = worst thing ever and I hate them, but that dude that hates the 360 and is making sure Versus remains exclusive = patriot'. Just pisses me off. I don't want to start some irrelevant debate over that, since I just meant to make a small point that most of the outrage over this stems from the *bleep* console war.

I don't think Valve is specifically requesting that EA make the PS3 game worse than the 360/PC version. I just see it as further proof EA sucks.

I think lost cause makes a very good point there.

Also if you don't like a platform, why should you develop for it? You made the game, You get to decide who you develop for.

Its better for them, Fans get the game and they don't have to waste time doing something they don't like.

I was thinking more between the 360 and the PC really. Seems more feasible.
