Hackers have been able to bring Microsoft's Windows Vista onto the Playstation 3, essentially turning it into a PC, ironically. In order for them to make this successful and work they had to emulate Vista. As a result, it's significantly slower (it took 25 minutes to boot the OS).

A video of it in in action can be seen in the quote, though it was recorded on a dodgy digital camera.

See, while the PS3 is more than capable of running Linux, it fares less well with Vista. To get the set-up running, the PS3 enthusiasts had to run Vista under emulation, meaning it took almost 25 minutes to boot.

Clicking on the Start menu was no fun either, since it took five and a half minutes to spring into action.

We’ve included a video of the PS3 struggling with Vista below, although it’s really not pretty.

It's cool that they did this, but I can't see much use for it though. Vista is like the anti-gaming system, I don't know you'd want to put it on a gaming console. It would run so poorly.

Pretty sure I'd rather have a Mac and run OS X or a PC/Linux than a PC/Vista, even with the gaming support for each side in mind.

Cool that they can, but no reason why you would. XP would be better to have on there.

This is clearly an example of "look what I did." Vista sucks

I have to assume most of you haven't used Vista...it's not as bad as people say. If you're relatively good at using a computer it works great. Just a couple extra hoops to jump through.

i'd imagine they chose vista because its known for being a significantly heavier load than most other operating systems, which makes it a more impressive feat. or something. who knows.

Id rather stick XP in the PS3 instead.

Though it is more impressive, XP or any Linux distro would have been a better, more functional choice. (KDE 4.01 FTW!)

    Really impressive stuff though.

That's like saying you rigged your sound system to play Raffi in mono sound; it's sort of the other direction you wanted to go in.
