Region Free Mod Coming To The Nintendo Wii

tidus04 | August 06, 2008 | News | Wii
The DCEmu community are currently in development of a chip-free mod for the Nintendo Wii which allow the console to become region-free. With this, it will be possible play and watch any game or channel that is available to the Wii. In order to understand the way this mod will be implemented, check out this video demonstration on it.

A lot of people are annoyed that the Wii is not a region-free system. They’re quick to point out that the PS3 is 100% region-free and most of Xbox 360 games (about 50-70%) are too.

A few people in the DCEmu community feel the same way and are working on a mod chip-free hack. It’s called the Homebrew channel, it will allow region-free gaming and channels. It’s also said that it will let you skip the nagging health warnings. Its not out yet, but they posted a video of what they have so far.

I am not sure why people think this is a big deal, I don’t have the desire to play a game in a language I can’t read. I also don’t have a problem waiting for games to come out my region. Then again, it would be nice to be able to disable those stupid warnings every time I play a game.

The homebrew channel & homebrew browser are just awesome, and they are really easy to install. QJ is the best place I know of for info on homebrew. http://wii.qj.net/
And I already have a homebrew region-free app on the Wii but I've never used it. With this and the release of the DVD access library Wii homebrew has taken huge leaps forward in the last few weeks.

Good question. I guess there's a way we can incorporate the JP VC games through homebrew, but I'm not exactly sure how it works (only recently been researching HB).

But damn I can't wait for this mod. ^^

A lot of things are possible with Homebrew. The PSP alone has many "ports" if you will from the PSX.

I'd rather have a Super Mario RPG that's in English.

The author of the article clearly doesn't live in the PAL region. >_>
