Miyamoto banned from talking about his hobbies

capin131 | August 09, 2008 | News | Wii Company
Shigeru Miyamoto, according to inside sources at Nintendo, has been banned by the company from talking about his hobbies--out of fear the competition would steal his ideas.
Shigeru Miyamoto is arguably the greatest game designer in the history of the industry. It is his brilliance and inventiveness that has created some of the most successful and endearing franchises–Mario, Zelda, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and more.

How so? I can't find a Wii Fit anywhere...but when I tried it at Nintendo World, I didn't want to stop. Maybe it's just me, but I've had more fun with friends on the Wii than most consoles (only exception is the PS2). WiiSports and WiiFit are pretty damn fun.

Strange, how can mentioning hobbies lead to people stealing ideas? :S What does Miyamoto like to do? Create games? Great idea!

It said endearing franchises. They had a chance to say Metroid, Pikmin, or one of the many great franchise he has created and they go for Wii Sports.

Actually, Metroid was created by Gunpei Yokoi.

However, Star Fox and Donkey Kong were two other franchises Miyamoto created that deserve mention.

Edit: I guess Miyamoto only produced Star Fox 64, but still.

Still that doesn't take away form the fact he has many great franchises under his belt and they mention a party game that is only played when friends are over. He also had Yoshi Island, right?

Yes, Yoshi's Island was one of Miyamoto's creations. Just remembered that he made the F-Zero series as well. Anyways, point taken; Wii Fit isn't exactly a "franchise."

Aww, that's too bad. That's how we get new information about games he's making since Nintendo as a company hates announcing games these days at events like E3. It reminds me of this comic.

"Wow, this got mentioned on Gonintendo.com. Of course a few of the comments there are less then positive. There's only one thing to do about that. I have to find out where these people live so I can break into their house in the middle of the night and kill them in their sleep."

      Haha.

That seems so wrong. Poor Miyamoto.

This seems like a pretty paranoid move on Nintendo's part. Besides, what are the chances that Sony and M$ even view things the way he does? I'm sure they couldn't have ever come up with Pikmin after working in their garden for a century.

Hate on Wii Sports and Wii Fit all you want. Just because you personally don't like them (and I don't really like them all that much, at least not for not long stretches of time)...the fact remains that both franchises are extremely successful and could represent a point in gaming where gaming branched out from people like you and me who bother to comment on shit like this.

like they can't just steal his ideas AFTER he's already implemented them? M$ does not give a *bleep*. they already stole the Miis, and final fantasy, and raped your entire village while being in the console videogame industry for only two generations.

    brutal.

well zelda was created out of his hobbies of playing in the woods of where he lived growing up...but then again, most people don't have brilliant minds like miyamoto and can't visualize things like that coming into action.

"out of fear the competition would steal his ideas"
      Read plox.

They never said he cant use his ideas to make games, They just banned him from speaking publicly about them before a game is made.

Umm, they're platformers that brought gaming back to the United States. You can say that any game is stupid, but it doesn't mean it is.

It's ridiculous because no one gives a shit what his hobbies are. I mean really, what kind of hobbies does he have that they're all suddenly game-worthy?

I think gaming companies are more interested in creating their own games, rather than stealing ideas from Miyamoto.

No offence Nintendo, but other companies have their own great ideas. They don't all want to steal your's.

Agreed with Gothic Girl. And Miyamoto is a human, not a robot. He has feelings and likes to do things in his spare time instead of creating games.

where has he been banned from talking about them? It must suck when his buddies come round and say "hey, would you like to go to the pub with us" and he can't answer, lol.
Thinking gaming companies won't steal ideas is a bit nieve! Of course they will, they want money! This seems a bit excessive though, seeing as a game where you roll in heaps of money and letters from adoring fans would be, whilst enjoyable no doubt, probably short lived.

HAHAHA oh wow. Seriously can you be anymore full of yourselves Nintendo. I mean for god sakes, Wii Sports, music and fit are the worst ideas anyone could have ever came up with. Especially if majority of the nintendo install base buys the system for those only and to let it collect dust.

Its why I don't have a Wii and why Im pissed.
