So much for Wii's family image...

Euphoric | August 17, 2008 | News | Wii
The Nintendo Wii is vastly regarded as a lighthearted and fun, family oriented console. The new 'over-the-top' hack 'n' slash game, MadWorld, may be about to complete blow that image out of the water. From impaling terrorists on street signs to rampaging with chainsaws, death and destruction is the clear focus in this title - definitely one to steer clear of for those who play Wii sports with the kids at BBQs.
A HACK-and-slash computer game that simulates strong violence could soon be released in Australia.

MadWorld for Nintendo Wii is marketed by creator Sega as featuring "over-the-top violence", where players can hack at "terrorists" with chainsaws and impale them on street signs.

The game, by PlatinumGames, is scheduled for a US release on Nintendo Wii next year, and could then be released in Australia, pending classification.

The hugely successful Nintendo Wii has so far been seen as a family-friendly game system, with games such as tenpin bowling and tennis, as well as healthy lifestyle programs.

The basic graphics and motion sensor remotes have been popular with young children and families.

However, the Victorian president of conservative group the Australian Family Association, Angela Conway, said MadWorld could threaten that image.

Ms Conway said it was unclear whether the game would get a rating from the Australian Classification Board, which could then allow the game to be sold here.

But she said she hoped the classification board would take into account the realism associated with the Wii system.

"The realism in the players' movements in the Wii format should be raising concerns about the impact of the game-playing on the player," she said.

"However, there are other games in other formats that you can effectively get guns and other realistic weapons to use."

In MadWorld, players take on the character of Jack, in Varrigan City, who is caught up in a game called Death Watch created by "terrorists" who call themselves The Organisers.

Using traps and weapons including chainsaws, street signs, and daggers, Jack tries to save the city and "destroy enemies who threaten their lives".

The Wii definately needs more variety in it's game. I thought Force Unleashed was going to struggle on the Wii as there aren't enough games on the console aimed at that age group. It looks like they are changing that though.

As much as it is awesome to see some more 'mature titles'...

...Madworld is too far over the top imo.

It's just because it's a cartoon/comic book style that they took it to those extreme's. It wouldn't happen if it were more realistic style graphics. To be honest I think it looks perfectly like a graphic novel and for what they were going for it should meet all expectations.

I really hate how the casual gamers are bitching about mature games on the Wii. A generation ago they were practicaly non-existent and all of a sudden they jumped onto the Wii bandwagon and act as if it's their console. If anything, it should be the loyal Nintendo fans who should have a say.

We try and have our say, but our voices are drowned out by Wii Fit.

Screw the family-friendly image shit. Game variety is the reason you're buying the *bleep*ing thing in the first place (if you invest a lot of time in games but can't afford other consoles/are a Wii fan).

Nice to have some more variety, especially considering the most mature games on the Wii atm are Twilight Princess, Corruption and that Resident Evil game I keep forgetting the name of.
Let's just hope this trend continues.

I don't see why everybody is saying one game will totally change the image of a console. It makes no sense at all, to be honest. Don't like big gory games? Great; stick to your Mario Galaxy and Kart Wii.

Screw family fun. If families want to play video games together (which I've never seen and would laugh if I did), then just don't buy the bad games... ?

But always get a little bit of hope when I see a Wii game that has actual violence come to the Wii.

One game, or even a handful of games doesn't change the overall image or the market of the console. It's still greatly leaned toward family play and mass appeal. PS3 having Ratchet & Clank and LittleBigPlanet or 360 having Viva Pinata and Banjo Kazooie doesn't separate them from their respective hardcore audiences, because of the rest of their catalogs.

Did everyone forget No More Heroes? That game was exreamly bloody and over the top. You slice people in half straight down and by the waist and their blood gushes out like a geiser. Seriously, this isnt the first game on the Wii to be this hardcore. Resident Evil 4 and Umbrella Chronicls are also very bloody games.

If Manhunt 2 didn't change Wii's image, then nothing will.
