Scientists finally admit game benefits

Euphoric | August 18, 2008 | News | Misc
So for what seems like the history of gaming we have been flooded by claims from 'professionals' related to the bad health stigma that surrounds gaming. Finally someone with 'a degree' has come forward to say games actually have their benefits as well. "Oh really?" I hear all you gamers say, "That's what we've been trying to get across for years." Well, leading psychologists have now admitted games are good for problem solving skills and also improve a person's dexterity. Both are very useful skills in the 'real world' as well, wouldn't you agree?
Playing video games improves manual dexterity among surgeons, making them faster and less likely to make mistakes, researchers have found.
The findings were contained in a raft of research about how video games effect the people who play them, discussed at the Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in Boston.

"The big picture is that there are several dimensions in which games have effects," including their content, how they are played, and how much, said psychologist Douglas Gentile of Iowa State University.

"This means that games are not 'good' or 'bad' but are powerful educational tools and have many effects we might not have expected they could."

Dr. Gentile presented several studies on video games including one involving 33 surgeons specializing in laparoscopy, the use of a thin lighted tube to inspect and treat various conditions in the pelvic and abdominal cavities.

Laparoscopic surgeons who played video games were 27 per cent faster at advanced surgical procedures, and made 37 per cent fewer errors, compared to their non-gaming colleagues, the study found.

Studies involving high school and college students confirmed previous findings about the social effects of playing violent video games, the Iowa State researchers said.

Duh! I guess it's good atleast someone "important" and "smart" finally said it. But geez, we've kind of already known that, right? My four year old nephew knows his left from his right thanks to Playstation 2. Not to mention his killer math skillz from playing RE4 and trying o figure out how much ammo he has and if he'll be able to take out all the ganado.

When I was first reading the article I was like at least they have finally admitted that it isn't sucha bad thing. Then I finished the article and realised they were just buttering us up for the end part. I chose to focus on the good though.

It's nice that some "smart" people finally agreed with what we've known for years. There's just one thing I gotta shoot...

"Students who played violent games were more hostile, less forgiving, and more apt to view violence as normal, than peers who played non-violent games."

I'm sorry, I play violent games nearly every day and I'm a very very kind and always forgiving person towards people, as long as they aren't jerks or anything all the time!

Yeah, my brother plays nearly no games at all, he has a really short temper and can be really violent, I'm a constant gamer, I rarely get frustrated and am quite laid back.

One thing that nobody seems to notice is that commercials have absolutely no effect on hardcore gamers, I personally get confused when a Mcdonalds add comes up, 'Why would they make commercials? Everyone already knows they exist, it's not like they'll get any more customers just for making these adds!' My dad, who hates gaming, and my brother are easily swept in by commercials, buying useless items every other day.

The only people though who had actually come out and claimed that games were good for you in any way in the past were gamers themselves. This is the first I had ever seen someone with any sort of 'respected qualifications' make statements like that.

    "Games are bad for you"
    "Games are good for you"

Both are constantly being said by "scientists". It doesn't change anything. I've stopped caring about their "studies", tbh.

And thats exactly what I meant Euphoric.

This is the 5th+ time we've seen articles from "Scientists" who claimed both.
