Final Fantasy Versus XIII to be traditional FF Game

Krunal | August 28, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
One thing that almost all Final Fantasy fans have wanted ever since FFX was released was a more traditional Final Fantasy game. But what do I mean by traditional? Well, I mean a world map through which the character goes through and enters cities on... and it seems that TalkPlaystation.com have gotten word that Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be traditional in that sense.

Discuss in the Final Fantasy Versus XIII forum
Final Fantasy Verus XIII, the exclusive Final Fantasy game for the Playstation 3 is believed to be more like a traditional Final Fantasy game than Final Fantasy XIII.

And how do you know all this? Sounds like your just making shit up to get more visitors for the site.

I kinda agree with that guy (regarding the original poster, of course).

It was in the lastest issue of Dengeki, part of an interview with Nomura himself.

I'll add some alt. sources now.

Thanks for that, I couldn't seem to find any 'basis source' though the news (if true) definitely did require a news article

Thank goodness they are going back to their roots.

Not saying that X or XII were bad, and XI was a totally different genre altogether - but the traditional point and click RPG cannot fade away.

Sometimes a step backwards is a step in the right direction.

This has nothing to do with point and click style games.

Anyway, this would be a very welcome surprise.

Point and click- turn based - active time battle - whatever name you want it to go by it is all the same thing.

Select Action > Select Target > Confirm

With different timings for everything. It is very point-and-click-ish, just instead of a mouse you have a cursor.

Every game is point and click by that definition.

Not necessarily- off the top of my head: hack and slash's, action games, FPSs, all wouldn't fall under that category.

FPS: Point crosshair at enemy, click button to attack.
Action Games: way to be vague
Hack n Slash: Face enemy, lock on (point) and attack (click). All that changes is how many times you press the button.

That's really stretching the definition of "point and click" Fatal, by point and click I was emphasizing the 'selecting' as opposed to 'pointing' in the purest sense.

Actually you were the one stretching the definition in the first place by calling turn based RPG's "point and click" games.

The terminology has been used to describe the older Final fantasy games.

          quote A FFXII Preview
Big changes are in store for the old-timers. We're used to a turn-based, point-and-click adventure that has followed the same set of rules for nearly 20 years. There have been differences in magic systems and job classes, but the game always felt the same. That was a part of the series' charm – that was its staple.

adding the world map is a big plus for me and i hope the fighting is like kingdom hearts 2
it would be like a RPG without restrictions and dare i say revolutionise the genre

This is great news. I hope it doesn't have ATB, but if it does, I'll tolerate it just like I tolerated it in IV, because turn-based gameplay is usually great no matter what.

This is great news for me, but a few people in the forums were a disappointed as they were expecting a new, darker, breed of Final Fantasy games.

Anyone else fall into this category ?

Well, I would be happy if this is true, but I must admit that I'm kind of curious to see what they could make of this game if they didn't re-use old themes. Either way, I'm happy.

Well they actually decided not to use blood in the cut scene with Aeris and then went and had blood in the cut scene with sephiroth at the end.

Just wondering do all 13 games have the same storyline? Like one finish then the next picks up where they left off? Because 13 games to finish a story line is kinda long don't you think?

New to the Final Fantasy series eh? No. Aside from FFX-2, FF7: Crisis Core and FF7: Dirge Cerberus, all of the Final Fantasy games are completely different stories with completely different characters in almost completely different worlds.

FFXI Doesn't really count as a story because it has many storylines, since it's an MMORPG.

How is this game going to be a traditional FF game?
Wasn't versus supposed to be having the same battle system like KH, considering Nomura is behind all of it? So technically I don't see, other than the world maps, how its going to be a traditional FF game.

Blood really hasn't been done in Final Fantasy before, the few rare times it showed up was usually in cutscenes. By the looks of this it will appear more regularly and likely in gameplay.

I'm a bit confused over what exactly is meant as traditional too, I guess stuff like the world map and airships.

      That was a cutscene too.

There's no indictation that there will be more blood in the game.

But that was just an ordinary grunt, in the past blood was only used rarely and when it was significant. eg Squall at the start of FFVIII
