BioShock producer: "Blu-ray hasn't made much of a difference"

PS3 owners hankering for some BioShock and hoping to trump 360 owners in the graphical department are all but out of luck. According to senior producer at publisher 2K Games Melissa Miller, Blu-ray hasn't made much of a difference, and they're aiming to be on par with the 360 version.

Makes me wonder if Sony could've/should've gutted Blu-ray from the beginning and saved everyone a couple hundred bucks each..
BioShock, originally released for 360 and PC late in 2007, is scheduled for release on PS3 in Europe on October 24, and will come with a new survivor difficulty mode and exclusive downloadable content in the form of Challenge Rooms.

PS3 owners had hoped for some form of graphical upgrade, however, senior producer at publisher 2K Games Melissa Miller confirmed to us at the Leipzig Games Conference last week that the team was aiming towards graphical parity with the 360 version, and that the Blu-ray format hadn't made much difference.

She said: "Graphical quality our goal was always to make sure everything looked just as good as on Xbox 360. So there was never anybody who could say, hey, why didn't I get this on 360 originally, because I don't feel like it's up to the visual quality. We're just trying to make sure that everybody is happy."

When asked if the Blu-ray format had provided any advantages to the development team, Miller replied: "In terms of specific things, it hasn't made much difference. The original game fit on a 360 disk so it wasn't like we were in need of room. We've tried to do what we can to make sure that the PS3 looks just as great as the 360, but in terms of necessarily utilising something specific about Blu-ray, to my knowledge, Blu-ray hasn't necessarily made a huge difference."

Lol, that's because they didn't use it. If they did, the game would be a lot bigger than the original Bioshock. -___-

Give me a break. This entire topic is just beyond ridiculus. Of course blu-ray adds nothing if they aren't using it. The article specifically says

"The game fit on a DVD9 so it wasn't like we needed the space."

That would be like me saying I get no benefit from my 500GB HDD over my 100GB HDD because I don't need the space. Yea, because I'm not using it. That doesn't mean I should just get rid of it. It just means I will have to wait a while to start using it fully.

In the mean time I still have it there to use if and when i do need it.

Would you have paid an extra $200 for it though if you weren't going to need it until years later though? I think that's the point. If DVD and blu ray things were the same price, then obviously pick blu ray. But seeing as how blu ray is so expensive (I was browsing DVDs and I say blu ray disks were like $35! for older movies!), it's not really worth it.

If a 3rd party developer says blu-ray isn't needed then it's ridiculous bullshit, but when a japanese, sony-loyal dev says it's awesome, of course it's objective and the truth!

I don't care what the developer does or doesn't use. My contention is with the poster of the article who is claiming Blu-ray is unneeded based on one game that wasn't built with the PS3 in mind in the first place.

That argument is complete BS. If it wasn't there it wouldn't be used, IE on the 360. Bioshock was developed for the 360 with DVD9 in mind. Metal Gear Solid on the other hand was developed for the PS3 with Blu-ray in mind. Because it is there. Wii games are built with motion control in mind because it is there.

Arguing that one developer doesn't need it and thus the system doesn't need it is crap. Some developers are using it. And Blu-ray movies are using it. And using ONE game that didn't need it because they didn't go out of their way to improve the graphics or sound or anything really is an invalid argument. It is there and some developers will use it. If it wasn't there to use then the point would be moot.

Well the fact that it's being used doesn't mean it's needed. Bioshock is a pretty amazing game with truly amazing graphics, and fits perfectly on a DVD9. And of course a blu ray movie needs it. HD Movies are way more objective for the necessity of higher capacity, games are a bit more gray. MGS4 takes up all the disk space because it is nearly a movie (apparently), not because the game is such a higher quality than games like Bioshock.

Yes, blu ray in theory can house resolutions that look amazing and have 10 times the resolution, but in practice, will we ever see 10,00 x 10,000 resolutions?

That's a rather weak argument. You're just drawing at straws. It might be a gray area, but MGS isn't the only game on the PS3 to use more than a DVD9. And it won't be the last.

The fact is it's there and it can be used. Suggesting that the PS3 would be better or worse without is is idiotic. Nor would I care to pay any less than I did. I paid the $600 to get it first, to get the best one they made, and to get all the features that came with it. If I didn't want those features I wouldn't have paid for them. Regardless of how much the developers use them or not.

And on my 360 I didn't. I bought it 2 years after launch. I bought it used. And I got the core with a 120GB HDD. Exactly the features I wanted with my 360. Cheap.

I didn't claim it was unneeded, I said I wondered, so as to provoke some debate, which it did.

What does she mean it doesn't make much of a difference? is she smoking something? More disc space = higher res textures and higher polly count models.

Lol, true. First she said that they wanted it to look exactly like the 360 version so they used the same amount of space and then she says that Blu-Ray's large capacity didn't make a difference. WTF

Well it didn't make a difference. Because they didn't use it.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. First she said it didn't make any difference and then she said they only used it as much as it needed in order to look like the 360 version. I don't mind though, this game is still graphically superb.

Apparently they decided not to, to keep all the 360 gamers happy. Pffft, PS3 gamers waited an entire year the 360 gamers have no reason to complain if the grafics are improved. They played the game and beat it and shelved it for something better. Not like they really care anymore.

Koloth guys, seriously this shouldn't be a surprised to anyone. I mean after all its a port with extra exclusive features for the PS3. Thats fine is it not? You have to really be crazy to think they'll actually upgrade the graphics for the PS3. PS3 onwers should be happy they're even getting this GOTY game, or as donnelly calls it, the best game the PS3 is getting.

I honestly don't see the problem here.

That's what the artcle says. They didn't want 360 gamers complaining and asking "why didn't we get this?".

Why, because she said having blu-ray didn't really help or hurt the development? Wow, she really is stupid.

You really can't blame them for not re-building Bioshock for the PS3. A port is fine. It's going to save them time and money. <sarcasm>Certainly sounds like a dumbass to me. </sarcasm>

Yea, Melissa Millers comments are fine. It's not like she is trashing Blu-ray, she is just telling it like it is. They made no changes so they didn't need the extra space provided.

As I said further up my contention is with the poster of the article.

It's not really a bad thing that there is more disk space. It just means future games will be awesome. Doesn't the PS3 have more disk space than the 360?

      Final Blade | September 05, 2008
You mean with the Discs? Yes, but space isn't an issue. Its whether or not they use the additional space on the discs.

If you mean Hardware space, no, well depends on the model but the elite has 120GB.
