Wii Storage Solution in the Near Future?

Deathsythe | September 09, 2008 | News | Wii Company Misc
It is being reported that Nintendo is looking into a new storage solution for the Wii that will be "better than a hard drive".

Speculation is some sort of online storage capabilities. Though it will not cater to the Wii-owners who do not use or possess WiFi.

No word yet on how this may affect hacked and modded Wiis either- mostly speculation at this point, but according to Reggie Fils-Aime, a Nintendo Executive, something is on the way.
There were plenty of announcements missing from the Nintendo 2008 E3 press conference this summer, but perhaps most surprising was the fact that the company did not address the ever-growing storage problem plaguing the Wii.

Since WiiWare hit the console earlier this year, the factory-installed 512MB of internal storage just isn't cutting it. Nintendo is essentially shooting itself in the foot: here we have all these new games to download and play, but only the capacity to store a limited number of them.

Kotaku is now reporting that the company does indeed have a storage solution on the way, but it won't come in the form a physical hard drive. Nintendo executive Reggie Fils-Aime tells Club Nintendo magazine that we'll see something even better than a hard drive for the Wii.

Wii owners who don't have Wi-Fi don't have storage problems.

The ones who run home-brew do, but as we have seen far too many times in the past- Nintendo is great about catering to the needs of homebrew users.

Deathsythe home-brew doesn't take up the Wii's internal memory, you mainly run home-brew off an SD card and some apps let you use a DVD or a USB flash drive for storage.

I don't think online storage is a good idea if it's from Nintendo, just look what happened to Brawls online service it only half works, and is full of lag.

I'm well aware of how homebrew works Livewire, but it is still possible - just not the norm as of yet.

And remember- as Nintendo said; only hackers and hardcore otakus would need more storage'

I don't see what it could be besides online storage. But I doubt Nintendo would go for that. I'm suspecting some kind of changes to how you purchase stuff.

Perhaps the ability to transfer games onto SD cards for use elsewhere?

Would be great for us, but a terrible move for them - so I doubt it.

The space SSBB takes up is nothing compared to some VC and Wii Ware games.
