Ps3 games seem to have a trend these days, mandatory installs. Most of them aren't to bad but then again you get some of the games that push it over the limit. This time its Bioshock, which would require 5GB of your PS3 memory.

The PS3 version of BioShock has a 5Gb mandatory install that takes a little over 10 minutes to complete.

The game was rumoured to have a sizable install after the BBFC rated the game back in July, but 2K commented at the time that it was likely to have an install of “around 5 or 6 minutes” at most, according to this DarkZero report.

One less reason for me to buy it. Considering they only tried to match the original you think they could have avoided this.

You would really not buy a game because of the install??

    Bale Fire* Sep 10, 08
No I wasn't all that interested with the game to begin with. Considering I know the major details about the story and all. Still I was thinking about getting it when its cheaper but this has put payed to those plans.

*bleep*ing bullshit. Now I'm really thinking of getting the 360 version.

Just get the freakin' 360 version if you have a 360, it's already there and it's way cheaper now.

Bah, I've only got less than a gig free. I don't like deleting demos (though I guess I would have to), and many videos have been deleted (keep some of my faves though).

I've got several gigs of music, but I am not getting rid of that dammit >_

How many demos do you have if you don't delete them? You must have at least fifteen...

I don't know what you keep on there that leaves you with only one Gig left. I've got plenty and I still have 33 GB.

I don't think I'll be buying this game.I wasn't that interested in it to begin with so having to use 5GB to play the game is a big minus for me.

Why do we have to get a 5GB Install when the 360 can play it without any sort of installing? Surely the PS3 can match the 360?

      Final Blade Sep 10, 08
Its not a matter of matching anything tbh. Right now this is the only method available to help framerate issues and such with the game making it run smoother. In fact the Force Unleashed for the PS3, is also getting a mandatory install, but not that big though. like 8 mins long so around 3 gigs.

Until Sony or the devs figure out a better way to solve this solution, this is whats going to happen. Don't expect Little BIg Planet not to have a install. I bet you anything its also going to have one, and Im just waiting for the amount of people here saying "Oh screw that, I loved the sound of LBP before, now this makes me not buy it".

        Supernouva Sep 10, 08
The only way they can solve this problem is to increase the drive speed of the PS3's Blu-ray disc drive, and I doubt Sony will be doing that.

Is it even possible without drastically reducing reliability?

There's no safe way to do it now.

That's not the only way, If the game is small enough they normally copy the game again onto the outer edges of the disk so the laser doesn't have to seek as far.

Wow, that really is terrible. Maybe it's a way of pressuring PS3 owners into upgrading to a new 180 gb model? I mean, it IS a "multimedia" platform, as Sony likes to advertise. That's really crap though, because it's already an expensive platform. Trying to force consumers into upgrading so soon is just plain dirty.

I can see how someone might eat up the space really fast if they download a lot of music, videos, demos... or hell, if they just play a lot of games.

It's not dirty when you can buy a laptop drive and stick it in the PS3 and have an instant 250Gb for $60 lol, this doesn't void the warranty either. Sony say we can do it.

"Is it even possible without drastically reducing reliability?

Are completely forgetting something. I can tell you game that had no installs at all, yet has one of the best graphics on the ps3 with no load time. Uncharted. So yes it is possible at this current stage of the ps3's life to have no framerate drop, no loading without installs.

      Final Blade Sep 10, 08
Wow, one freaking example. You do know other games are different then Uncharted right? How they're made and the engine of the game. Just because one does it, doesn't mean all games will be able to. If that was the case, don't you think they would be doing that right now??

Wow Final Blade made the best point on the page. Think I should stay off here for a while.

But really, I don't understand how people are STILL crying about installs. You either don't care to acknowledge why it's done AT ALL, or you just want to follow the mob. Then you got people who at this point still don't even know you can upgrade your hard drive. Those people have to be oblivious. My PS3 is 250GB. $64. Same price as a game.

Have you ever thought that some people just don't want to buy a bigger HDD yet.Sure I could just buy one but I don't want to buy one yet.Now if a game came out that I REALLY wanted and didn't have enough room to play it, then I would buy a bigger HDD.But Bioshock is low on my priority list.So the easier and cheaper way is for me to not buy the game. When I feel the need to buy a bigger HDD I will buy the game.Till then Bioshock is a no purchase for me.

        Seeker X Sep 12, 08
I doubt Bioshock is the last game coming out right now with mandatory installations. That being said, there's nothing but advantages for getting a bigger hard drive. I upgraded mine to an 80 Gig and I'm already running down 47 Gigs. It's a precautionary measure which you will be grateful when you realize your favorite game needs some space and you won't have to delete shit to fit it in.

        iLLmatic Sep 12, 08
That had nothing to do with my point. I was talking about people still complaining about install files. Regardless, not buying a game because you don't want to deal with what is essentially an extremely trivial issue, does not make even a little bit of sense to me. There shouldn't be anything on your hard drive that you can't clear up for one game. If it is that important, why is it only on your PS3? If you have demos, delete them. If you have older games installed, delete those and install the new game for the time being. If you downloaded games off PSN, delete them and download them again later. There are many options, but people want to nitpick for what reason I don't know. PS3 doesn't have a disc changer. Nobody realistically changes games so often that they can't just deal with deleting an old file temporarily.

The thing is iLL, everyone likes to take shots at this issues and compare it to the ever so popular and superior 360 where games don't need to be installed. So realistically instead of taking the available solutions, they want to bitch about it. I can't say I didn't see it coming, I mean after all didn't people do the same thing with the PS2 and xbox 1 when it came out? People bitching about something.

    Gamesta100 Sep 16, 08
Well I basically have no choice but to upgrade my HDD.I had to delete quite a lot of things just to free up under 4 GB's.

So I probably will buy this game.Maybe not on release but hopefully shortly after.

Surely the games merits are greater than a chunky install guys?
I have to laugh at people saying "NOT GETTING BIOSHOCK NOW THIS TURNED ME OFF". Make no mistake, you will regret that desicion.

Its a fantastic game. The install is just a fact of life for the PS3 at this time. I think all Gamegrep members deserve to play this game; would be a shame for someone to miss out because of a mere install.

Clearly, I was actually referring to those who were intent on getting it until they heard about the installs, not those blatently passing the title..but thanks anyway.

There's no reason for 5GB. We'd managed just fine before with 500MB installs, so BioShock's devs must suck at using PS3.

Besides, both Naughty Dog and Insomniac said they wanted to share their know-how, then every game will have no installs.
