Pete Hines' Official Word on the Fallout 3 Changes: Morphine Now Med-X

Daigoji_Gai | September 10, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
With all the fanboy love out there for Fallout 3, especially from the purists, this will be news. I for one (with FO1, FO2 and Tactics all still faithfully installed and being played through as prep for 3) love the changes to add a pinch more realism to the post apocalyptic world!
There’s been a lot of talk in the blogosphere about changes that were made to Fallout 3 so that the game wasn’t banned in certain territories (most notably Austraila). It was revealed yesterday afternoon by 1up.com that the changes made to the game would be made across all territories, so as to not create confusion, but what changes, specifically? I shot a note to Pete Hines, VP of Marketing and PR at Bethesda, to find out just what was changed.

I prefer morphine to Med-X. Med-X sounds so gay.

Yes, but Supernouva, Med-X keeps in line with the Fallout mythos established in Fallout 1 and 2 for the PC. In those games all the med's had generic names... it is part of the "50s" style that permeates throughout the games, with the music exctera...

In past games, Rad-X, the boosts, etc - were meant to sound... for lack of a better descriptor: "50s campy"...

Pete keeping with the lexicon of the previous games, and changing the name from Morphine to Med-X is actually genious and has many Fallout fanboys like me, extremely happy.

Real world drug names don't mesh well with the Fallout universe.

Med-X doesn't sound too bad. People can argue about censorship, but whether it's morphine or Med-X, I wouldn't buy this for the kiddies. I just feel bad that Hines and the Fallout 3 team had to put up with so much political bull. Waste of everyone's time and energy because whatever they decide to name it, doesn't change the fact you're pumping drugs, meaning it's still too mature for your 10-year-old relative.

*applause* But the "pumping of drugs" is the least, how can I put it, of the "evils" contained in the previous *PC platform* Fallout games... prostitution, the bloody mess perk... Fallout has never been for children. I simply wish more people were informed like you - doing research on the game before buying it for a young one (or allowing a young one to buy it themselves) rather than having my entertainment compromised because people can't raise their kids. Latter part is immflamatory, but I was allowed to see many things rated R when I was in single digits in the early 80s... including Return of the Living Dead in theaters, when I was 7 (or was I 8)... Always knew the difference between fantasy/reality and make believe on television, and I turned out fine thanks to great parents. Every person raises their child differently, I am simply tired of the calls for censorship/government involvement because people are worried about "the children" - so my entertainment is compromised because someone else can't control their child? Frustrating... maybe this will change if I ever become bold and decide to have children... speaking to friends with kids, apparently it does.

Relating to what you said, in an article I wrote for Neoseeker, Hines mentioned it was a real headache trying to cater to the needs of different countries because every country's censorship criteria were different. Sometimes, the drugs were the problem, sometimes sexuality, sometimes violence. So there are some people who may not think violence and prostitution are as bad as the drug use. I'm not one of them, but people really do have their own scale of "bad" to "worse."

I just say the whole thing is silly. Like you said, even if they censor the drugs, there's all the other issues that make Fallout such an intense game/franchise. Changing the name from morphine to Med-X doesn't change any of that!

If it fits in with the game then this is a good thing, Morphine didn't fit it would have been like a Ferrari being in a game full of unlicensed fake cars.

honestly this is such a minor change. anyone who is whining about this is just looking for a reason to whine. get over it. it fits with the game more like this. everyone who played the other games probably related jet to meth, and pysco to pcp anyways its not like you are missing out.

Oh snap! You mentioned JET! Hahahahah +50 points man! I am trying to finish FO2 now (as a refresher) and my character is a JET addicted ladies man (kama sutra perk anyone? lol) hahahah, kicking arse and taking names in Vault City...

I hope the kama sutra perk returns in Fallout 3.
