Dead Space Really Was Banned, How Violent Is this Game?

Linkin Park Fan | September 10, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
It was announced a while ago that Dead Space was banned from China, Japan and Germany. Then rumors started flying everywhere that something was fishy about this ban. EA has responded and they have confirmed that this is true, the game was banned in all three of those countries. Which begs the question, how bad can this game be to get banned from Japan?
We reported earlier that EA's survival horror game Dead Space has been banned in China, Germany and Japan. Apparently, there was some contention by GamePolitics as to whether the title was actually banned, noting that EA had not responded to the news. Well, they just did. EA, in an e-mail to X3F last week, stated that "Dead Space was banned from being sold in Japan, Germany, and China!"

Furthermore, one of the developer's alleged Twitter confirms this as well. "I just confirmed with upper management that Dead Space is banned in China, Germany and Japan. Not a rumor folks ... it's true." To us, whether it was banned or not in those countries doesn't matter much -- we are pretty psyched for this game anyway. What about you?

I just read the article comments. Someone said exactly what I was thinking. Throw in some tenticle rape and Japan will ok it.

Well I thought it would get refused classification in Aus, but I never expected it to be banned in 3 other countries.

Seeing as 3 other countries banned it, you can almost guarantee it won't see the light of day in Aus unless it is edited.

Well apparently Aus passed it as an MA15+ though as you say it may have been edited before hand, especially with EA taking this long to confirm the ban in those countries.

Actually I just didn't know it had already passed classification here.

But still it doesn't mean it won't be banned after actually being released.Manhunt wasn't banned here till like 6 months after release.

Sucks for Deadspace. Not like I was going to pick it up though. I wouldn't be surprised if the U.S doesn't get it.

Really? Doesn't the US get like everything?

Are there some games that haven't been ported there because of violence issues?

Not really, if anyone has a brain I was clearly stating that since Japan never bans anything themselves and has far worst shit, I wouldn't be surprised if the U.S doesn't get the game. I mean honestly whether you want to believe it or not, this is pretty crazy for a game to be banned in japan of all places. And it really makes you question if other places like the U.S might follow. Think about it, honestly. It doesn't take idiotic to understand the logic I was using. I was making a statement, saying "Hey I wouldn't be surprised if its banned in the U.S after hearing it being banned in Japan of all places". Not to mention if its really as bad as they make it out to be, who knows how much shit they're going to wash down when editing it like they did to Manhunt Two.

Awesome! I hope this is the scariest and gruesome game ever. I hear that your unallowed to pause the game during scary parts of the game, such as if a bad guy surprises you from a corner, you have to fight him off or run, and you cannot pause. That's going to be amazing

Why is everyone so surprised about the ban in Japan? They have some of the harshest censorship laws out there.

Jisatsu Saakuru (Suicide Club), Battle Royale, Resident Evil. Also, there is no law for censorship regarding televised media....so much for that theory of being one of the strictest countries on censorship, huh? :0

When it comes down to censorship in Japan a lot of it boils down to individual companies deciding on what to censor, not the government.

WHat's the big deal? It seems like just another game that relies on violence than actual gameplay to sell.

Darn, it's too bad Destructoid was used as a source with GP. I heard first hand as well from Andrew Green about this; albeit we were a tad late on posting about it before Destructoid got to it (:

Yeah, that's right. You heard it from us. Or Destructoid. Preferably us, though.
