This is insane - apparently (if you rush through without exploring all the nooks and crannies found in a Bethesda game) you can rush through Fallout 3 in 75-minutes. A crazy notion, but not if you consider that speed-runs of Fallout 1 and 2 were also possible.

Just before the launch of their games, Bethesda holds an intra-office speed run to see who can get from the beginning to the end of the main quest the fastest. The two finalists for this year’s competion, in honor of the impending release of Fallout 3, were Jim Browne, a level designer for the game, and Sam Bernstein, a QA tester.

Ugh, I hate these speed runs.

To me, they make games look bad...I realize that speed runs are just completing the game as fast as possible, and they aren't accurate representations of the length of the game, but not everyone realizes that.

I think a lot of people would see something like this and say, "Wow, Fallout 3 can be beaten in 75-minutes? I'm not paying $60 for that."

Drogo, your last sentence hit the nail on the friggin head with gusto. I completely agree with you and hope it doesn't hurt sales for the game/influence reviews.

        Thanks, Daigoji

I know I'm definitely, definitely picking this up. I got $50 for my birthday two-weeks ago, and I'm waiting until this comes out to spend it. That is, if someone is willing to pay the extra $10 + tax

Yea I feel the same way. It's the same reason so many idiots say MGS4 has 3 hours gameplay and the rest is being forced to watch a movie. You can speed run through ANY game, but that doesn't change the advertised gameplay time.

+50 points for defense of MGS4, the conclusion to one of the greatest, most intelligent and involved gaming franchises evar! +50!

It doesn't matter. It'll be like Oblivion. Sure you can go close the gates and win but I loved exploring and dungeon raiding and shit.

Unlike Oblivion however, once you beat the main storyline in Fallout 3, the game is over.

You know this how? Because the past games were like that? This game is made by different developers, hell this game has over 200 endings even if you can't explore after story completion you can still start again and make all of the 200+ story arc choices differently.

I think this was confirmed somewhere.

I honestly hope not but I'm like 90% sure I read it someplace.

It was actually confirmed in an article somewhere.

Got a point as well, but for games unfamiliar with how much you can do in a BethSoft title it could be misunderstood as being a short game-play experience, which no BethSoft game is.

Hopefully you can't speed-run easily because of a big use of level scaling.

      Daigoji_Gai Sep 18, 08
I completely agree... but lets hope level scaling isn't as problematic as Oblivion's was right out of the box... thank goodness for the PC balance mods for that...

Oh the mods made Oblivion, for sure. Mods made Oblivion go from an okay game to an awesome game.

Sadly though, hate to break the bad news to ya man: Bethesda is not releasing a SDK / Mod making kit anytime soon for Fallout 3, if ever. They have officially confirmed that Fallout 3 will not be coming out with a SDK, but it 'may' come later.

Which is REALLY too bad. The user made mods were the main thing i was looking forward to in Fallout 3.

Kspiess: I've been preaching that for the longest. The Hack n Slash mod that allows you to remove limbs and gives slow-mo combat moves, some of the equipment and armors, the addition of fletching kits, flaura and fauna and indigenous wildlife you can skin and make equipment, and the flying mounts seriously reinforced why I will never, EVER, buy a Bethsoft game on a console until there is a better solution for handling user-created mods that don't involve 2-$4.00 dlc purchases on live or the psn network..

A speed run of Oblivion only took 11 mins. I would assume that the people who did these speed runs of Fallout 3 over at Bethesda know what they're doing so they would get the best time as possible. 75 mins is quite impressive.

That really depends on level-scaling. You could finish Oblivion on Level 1 if you never chose to level up your character.

Automatic level-scaling = automatically playing the game is pointless

They used a glitch though. It probably wouldn't be possible to do it nearly that fast legitimately. I'm guessing Fallout 3 is more like Morrowind where there is a couple of shortcuts to "win" the game.

    BANDITO ATTACK Sep 19, 08
well, someone beat morrowind in 12 minutes. anything is possible, i guess. @_@

    Drogo Baggins Sep 19, 08
lol, 11 mins for Oblivion, and 12 mins for Morrowind? Those are obviously fake.

It's absolutely not possible at all.

It would take more than 12 minutes to run from each place to the next, even with Oblivion's fast travel, unless pausing the game also pauses the game clock.

Maybe, maybe it's somewhat possible if they just mean a certain line of quests, but even if it was just talking about strictly the shortest quest-line, no way is anyone doing it in 12 minutes or less, unless they use a "finish-all quest" cheat, or they use some insane mods to make it all ridiculously easy.

Is there a video of this somewhere?

Actually, it looks like Youtube is my best friend, according to the link

Anyway, that's not a real play-through. Using glitches/cheats/mods would surely make such a thing possible, but it's not really beating the game.

He really only did two quests out of the (I believe) 100+ that are in the game.

So, no, he didn't beat Oblivion in 10 minutes, like I said before. It's not possible.

I agree with you! I need to check this video out myself, but even considering the core storyline missions, that just seems like an impossible task.

He must have meant 110 minutes. 11 simply isn't possible, like you say.

    Bale Fire Sep 19, 08
No I saw Obilvion done in 11. However it wasn't a proper playthrough, the guy managed to glitch his way into the building where the final piece of the game takes part

Speed runs of the first two Fallout games were possible also, in fact, there is a walkthrough I think I remember seeing on gamefaqs.com (when I reinstalled Fallout 2 a a couple of months ago) that described how to get power armor and uber equipment right after leaving the village of Arroyo.

I think most speed-runners would say that using in games bugs and glitches to finish the game are okay. What you can't do is use cheat codes or external cheating programs. But finding glitches and stuff is part of the fun and the challenge of doing speed-runs, according to what i gathered from the speeddemosarchive.com
