they can still use snake! he's only been in less than 10 games. he hardly did anything in MGS2.
there is a 7 year gap between MGS2 and MGS4. a 4 year gap between MGS1 and MGS2. there are big (don't know) gaps between MG/MG2 and MGS1.
Raiden has a family, and he's better as a side character with kick-ass knife/sword skills.
mabey we can play as Liquid Ocelot or Liquid Snake, see what they do in the times between MG2 and MGS1, and After MGS2-MGS4
Either way we knew the Metal Gear series would continue.
After all story wise the big exciting times in his life are suppose to take place during the games. The rest of it would be his normal day to day routine. Just because there are gaps doesn't mean there is anything to tell really. I'm fine with Snake's story being done. And I would much prefer that they started over with a completely new cast to be honest. Sure you could tie the MGS cast in some how just to appease long time fans. But going in a new direction isn't a bad idea as long as you keep the main gamplay points there.
Although two things to keep in mind though when going a new direction. You have to make the character as bad ass as Snake for people to like him. And you have to do so in a believable way. That is part of why people didn't like Raiden. He was to green and a little whiny. Green is ok, but the character has to be tough and ready to do what needs to be done. And the player has to like and believe the character can do it.
