As an update to the story posted here about a rumor of Valve being hacked (http://www.gamegrep.com/news/1330-valve_hacked_cc_numbers_stolen/) a security expert was even brought in and he managed to find a way into Valve's servers as well. The hacker in question who goes by the alias of MaddoxX says he tried to get in contact with Valve but they would not reply to his email, closed any threads he made about it in their forums and aren't even warning customers of potential information leakage.

Valve is even silly enough to put up an email address (Catch_A_Thief@valvesoftware.com) if you have any information regarding the situation.

Sitting inside Valve Corp's bank account as of April 8, 2007: $9,003,960.83 USD. Allegedly. That information didn't come from some proud, trumpeting corporate press release or quarterly earnings statement. The Bellevue, Washington gamemaker never talks. Especially when hackers claim to pillage secure servers, stealing user credit card numbers and financial statements.

This is the second time Valve has had a serious hack-in, and both times they acted to save face rather than do the right thing. This is reflected in their reaction and behaviour in response to other crises too. They make great games, and Half-Life 1 was revolutionary for me, but Valve's management should sit down and evaluate some of their security and also their policies regarding honest disclosure. Maybe this headline should read "Valve faces crysis and fails to respond".
