Microsoft realised that the PS3 is more dominant and the Xbox 360 has only been released for a year and a half. Why are Micrsoft designing a new box already?

Is Microsoft really preparing a new Xbox? According to a patent filed in the US, extreme techy types at the corporation are working on a ‘multi-component gaming system’, creating a monster networked gaming centre for the home.

This means you could link up your Windows Mobile phone, Zune or even your laptop to a console at the heart of the network, allowing them to share the same platform. With the current 360 unlikely to be able to cope with such a raft of additions, it seems likely that Microsoft could be talking about a new gaming box. An Xbox 720 if you like.

The guys over at Unwired View reckon this could mean using your Zune dock for sound effects while your phone acts as the console’s controller. Others are speculating that this is the first move from Microsoft to create their much vaunted digital home.

Whatever the reason, its still very early stages for this new device. And with the 360 Elite not even on UK shelves yet, it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing this gadget for some time. Best to fire up Gears of War and check back here for more updates.
