Behold, the age of the typewriter save system is at an end. Capcom will be implementing a much more user-friendly save system in the upcoming Resident Evil 5, one that doesn't involve lugging around a sack of ink ribbons.

Discuss in the Resident Evil 5 Forum

One of the most memorable/annoying aspects of the Resident Evil games was the save system. Players had to scour the area for typewriters and save their game using a limited number of ink ribbons. No more, though.

There were no ink ribbons in RE:4, and typewriters were everywhere. It was fine really, but the more user friendly the better I guess.

Carrying around the ink ribbons was a pain in the ass, yes, but it made the game scarier because you had to go out there among the walking dead and find some! It makes me sad that they're taking so many steps away from the original Resident Evil (even MORE than Resident Evil 4 did).

I like the chapter system, but nothing beats the nostalgia of the old Ink Ribbon system.

Meh- I'll have to see how this plays out.

Why should it be more user friendly? The whole point of a survival horror game like RE was surviving the game with barely enough supplies. You had to be careful about where and when you saved, it added to the suspense. Disappointing to say the least, they should change this to Action-Horror rather than survival.

They should change this to Action, this game doesn't look scary at all and it seems geared at gamers that weren't even born when Resident Evil 1 came on the scene. This games series better end after this one though i don't care the series is dead to me heh.

Everything is easier and user-friendly these days, isn't it? Having to carry around ink ribbons before was part of the survival aspect of a survival horror game. You were lucky to have a full fun, 1 clip, and 2 ink ribbons before. You actually had the feeling of urgency to do what you had to, to get out alive. Now, you have enough ammo for a small squad and you can save anywhere.

I agree with keeping the amount of ammunition low? A finite number of saves, though, is just a pain in the ass.

Well it provides more of a challenge too. Videogames didn't used to have saves at all and we had to start over from scratch. I just think they've taken the survival aspect away with all the changes.

Boo...*bleep*ing...hoo. I guess the prick didn't know how to deal with item management. I have reason to believe that the author is a wuss and inexperienced at RE which explains the attitude towards the older save system by making it sound 10x worse than it really is. Considering that the typewriters were usually in safe rooms...alongside an ITEM BOX, must take A LOT OF EFFORT TO TAKE A FEW STEPS BACK AND FORTH AND A MINUTE OF YOUR LIFE.

Well I liked 4's system. It was still typewriters but you didn't have to worry about ink ribbons. I never had an issue with keeping enough ribbons in the past though.

It really doesn't bother me too much. I guess. The only thing I'm pissed about is that I always loved the typewriter music. RE4 was my favorite of them. The save music was awesome. Hopefully it'll play on the start>Save Game screen.

The typewriter has been apart of the series from its beginning.
I for one, could look past its annoyance with ink ribbons and the savebox.

It will also fun. I could plan some sort of strategy on where I was going next during the reflective times in the saverooms. The tranquil music and the general atmosphere within was nice.

Its a shame such charm is being tossed aside.

From the gameplay shown, the AI already look like just small obstacles. They turned this series into a 'zOMG I canz cru5H da z0mbeeZ!11!' series...not to mention our characters are now smug-faced *bleeps*.

Bit by bit, they'll get rid of everything old RE had that made it great. Meh, from survival horror, to action.
