The changelog of PlayStation 3 firmware 2.50 is now out. Among the new features includes in-game screenshot support, background downloading, new power-save settings and support for the official bluetooth headset.

Changelog:

Support for the PS3 Official Bluetooth Headset - enables High-Quality (HQ) mode, which delivers clear and wide-band online voice chat. Plus, on-screen indicator shows battery status, volume level and use of HQ mode.

PlayStation Trophies interface enhancements - This update makes sharing and comparing your trophies with your friends even easier. On 1st part of the profile page you’ll see a symbol under level that represents level and the actual percentage towards the next level along with the existing level meter. The level symbol carries over to the trophy comparison screen where you will now be able to see your level, your friend’s level and the percentage towards the next level for both users along with all of the game by game comparison information you see today.

Friend status – Offline friends on your Friends list will have information below their avatars that will indicate how long it has been since they were last online.

Video – This update adds the Scene Search feature similar to the feature on the PSP. Activating this feature while viewing a video on the PS3 will break the video up into scenes that you can quickly access by pressing the X button. You can break the videos into one, two or five minute intervals. In addition, you can now choose to have all of the videos under the video section of the XMB play in sequence. Go to Settings then Video Settings to turn this option on.

PlayStation Store – The redeem codes option has been added to the store to make it easier to redeem your PlayStation Network Cards and promotion codes. In addition, PlayStation Network Sign Up and Account Management have been redesigned.

Power Save Settings – You can now set your PS3 and wireless controllers to turn off automatically after set periods of inactivity. Go to Settings then Power Save Settings to turn on these features.

Background Downloading - You now have the option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content has completed. This option is available when you turn off the system from the button under [Users] while content is being downloaded or installed.

In-game Screenshots - this tool will allow everyone to capture, share and in other words, immortalize their favorite gameplay moments. This will be supported on a game by game basis. Please check back to find out which games will support this feature.

No they even say it will be on a game by game basis so it's yet another feature that has to be developer approved, though it will probably pushed in some way by Sony but how much they will push it is yet to be seen, though if in-game soundtracks is anything to go by not many have that feature and it's been capable for months.

Some of those things were good, but I'm always saddened to hear of any awesome features that are left up to the devs to implement into their games. Example is in-game music. A great feature, but hardly any devs seem to care to implement it.

Look at it this way . . . The ONLY game thus far doing in-game screenshots is Resistance. Now I'm sure the PS3 has had this ability since close to launch (Pre-launch it was said to be there, but like many features, taken out). Just like Music. So, if Devs didn't care to implement it before . . . who is to say they'll do it now? I hope I'm looking at this wrong, but . . .

Well both features are a double edged sword, developers spend millions of dollars on the soundtrack, upwards of 10 million on getting the songs or paying the composer, most given the choice would just not give the gamer the chance of playing Michael Jackson over their hard work.

With screenshots it's another downside most developers are safe in the knowledge that if a gamer finds a bad texture or a glitch they will have to take a low quality video or picture of the screen, with this tool the gamer will have an untapped source to take high res hd quality screenshots of any faults they can find, it's like giving ammunition to those that want to go on a campaign telling everyone why the game is shit even if it isn't.

Wipeout HD and Linger in Shadows have their own photo mode, and so does Metal Gear Solid 4 if you count using the camera.

Motorstorm also has in-game screenshot grab.

But anways, I think this is different then in-game soundtrack. Because devs want you to listen to their music. But taking pictures of a cool scene is completely different. Its not going to hinder the game experience and can add a lot of replay value. So I actually see more devs using this feature then in-game music.

i cant say how happy i am that the power save feature for the controller was put in this update. i would be watching a blu-ray movie and i would forget to turn off the controller and it would really piss me off when i went to play MGO and i would have to hook up my controller to the ps3 to charge! Great update!

Pretty decent set of new features. I hope the network stability and Bluetooth issues are cleared up also. I wish they would add internet radio like on PSP.

Bah. I was looking forwards to screenshot support across the board of games -_-

Stupid sony, what's the point of adding features, if most developers won't bother?

Look at in-game music? How many devs use that?

Trophy support is also hit or miss, some games do, some don't. Plenty of new games don't, for example....

Sony needs to make some stuff COMPULSORY! It worked for MS, why not Sony, eh?

Note: I DO listen to in-game soundtracks, but you know, they DO get old after a while....

Well, I think the devs need to put some codes in the game or patch for it to be compatible. Which is why some has it, and some don't, though newer games do have it. Old games probably won't, and by old I mean Ninja Gaiden Sigma type old.

But don't take this as fact though.

Hehe, this looks to be an awesome update. I'm always downloading demos every night, and to have the PS3 automatically turn off would be awesome instead of wasting power!

If only demo's downloaded and installed faster. I do like the friend status though, that is one thing I've always enjoyed looking at on my 360.

I think, updates people might not know from this list are:

Browser is generally faster (some exceptions, some people seem to be experiencing slowdown)

Music player has a pause button (and you can bring up the player by clicking on the currently playing song). Good, but bring back the original controller based mode of control too....Seems music can be turned up louder? Might be something else I missed (never paid much attention to the music player, since I dislike it).

Likely some minor issues (heard memory usage when using flash9 is worse, not that it was good to begin with).
