With the poor reception after the first game's release and Ubisoft asking for gamers opinions before even thinking about making an Assassin's Creed 2, many thought the future of the franchise was in doubt, despite a cliffhanger ending. However Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed animator Alex Drouin confirmed on a website to be teaching Altair, the protagonist of the games, to swim.

David Wilkinson told the website that Prince of Persia and Assassin's Creed animator Alex Drouin, was presently engaged "getting Altair to swim".

A new Assassin's Creed was of course never in doubt, Ubisoft chief Yves Guillemot having hinted at the game previously; although the status of the sequel remains unofficial, and unclear.

Wow this is a surprise, wasn't expecting this. I hope the bugs and other issues from the first gets fixed in this sequel.

You weren't? AC was played to be a trilogy, so I'm not the least surprised.

WTF? This comes as a surprise? Surely those who played the first one know that there is bound to be a sequel.

Looking forward to it. I'm one of the few people who loved the game.

Well obviously Final Blade did not play it, unless he just miraculously forgot the plot of the game.

Ah, I'm glad it's been announced! =D Also, I'm glad they took this long to announce it, it means they've beent thinking. There were a lot of problems with AC, not just swimming. They now have the chance to fix them and make an awesome game!

AC had a lot of potential. I'm hoping Ubisoft have realised what was good about the game (fannying about, assassinations) and what was bad (everything else).

I am not suprised at all. I am biased towards this game though since it was the reason I moved up to the current generation of gaming. I will be waiting for this one .

I'm surprised at how many are "not surprised." If you have been keeping up (and as Silver Mirror links back to), you'll know that they weren't going to continue the series because of the mixed receptions it got, cliffhanger ending or not.

Assassin's Creed was one hell of a game, imo. The gameplay flowed as far as jumping from rooftop-to-rooftop went, but I just hope they don't make the missions so repetitive.

I guess I was just looking at my own opinion of the game to determine if I was suprised or not, I wasn't looking into it any more than that. :-/

Ubisoft wouldn't kill off the series no matter what, it made them a boat load of money, it sold over six million copies in 12 months.

It also is one of the fastest selling new game IP's ever.

And the money they made on it probably helped save Ubisoft from being bought out by EA

But they weren't going by sales, they were going by our reactions, most of which were quite critical. I mean, a sequel to a game that was over-hyped or average to the majority (mainly critics) wouldn't fair as well as the first.

But then again, I see what you're saying. That's quite an accomplishment. ^^

I guess I'm one of the few people that loved the the game and doesn't have any problems with it. I think it's one of the most beautiful games ever made and a blast to play. And I don't understand why there is so many people that hate it.

But anyway Ubisoft like any other company cares much more about money than customer opinion, just look at the shovelware they release for the DS each month. With the amount of money Ubisoft made on Assassin's Creed if they said that they won't be making another one the stockholders would revolt. Not making Assassin's Creed 2 was never an option.

Oh you're not alone. I thoroughly enjoyed it myself, spent hours on end just exploring and leaping around, heh.

Nevertheless, Ubisoft did ask the fans whether or not they'd want a sequel, and I think that shows their standing with their customers a little bit.

I'm not surprised, Assassin's Creed was a fantastic game. Can't wait to be honest. I had suspicions that the game would be all futuristic but you still play as Altair... I wonder how that will work. =X

It's a trilogy, so no surprise here. But the first one was a diamond in the rough. It had its moments of grandeur, but those were washed over by waves of repetitive tasks and easy gameplay. Nothing that cant be fixed in the sequel, but for some reason I'm not feeling like this game we'll fix them.

I thought the game was really fun, but I think the combat needs to be revamped, and the repetetive nature of the game needs to be thrown out. The controls were great, and so were the graphics and the plot was weird, but intresting. The game had alot of potnetnial, and while I enjoyed it alot, there are alot of flaws to it that really need to be fixed, but I think the most prominent one is the repetetive mission structure, doing the samething over and over sucks.

I think Ubisoft said the game would be a trilogy? Glad to see the 2nd one is on its way.

    Final Blade Oct 14, 08
I thought my comment was pretty much common sense why I was surprised. Anyway basically Storm summed up my thoughts, I have played the game and beaten. I also knew about the trilogy but I also remember hearing so many complaints and the gaming being over-hyped and etc, that I'd thought as Storm listed that they wasn't going to make the sequels. Sales of the game is irrelevant.

Sorry friend, but I have to disagree, I think sales are very relevant when it comes to a sequel or not. There never would have been a sequel to Final Fantasy if the original had not sold well, and if Halo didnt sell well, do you think Halo's 2 and 3 would have popped up? There was a PS2 rpg caled MS Saga. I never played it but I read up on and it apparently there was goona be some sequels planned for it, but never came through because of bad sales.

I have given you many examples as to why sales ARE important in the consideration of a sequel or not. Thats not to say everything succesful will warrant a sequel, but it does help in knowing that since the previous installment was succescful, that chances are the next one will.

To my point, sales are irrelevant. Last time I checked, Killzone 1 sucked hard and barely had enough sales, yet were getting a sequel. Sales may make the talk easier but doesn't mean its always going to get a sequel, thus my point.

From what I know, there was tons of bugs and alot of talk from the web that AC wasn't that great, it was overhyped and all that. Not many fans from what I know on 5 different boards wanted another sequel. Again im just stating what Storm said earlier and my thoughts.

Killzone still sold moderatly well. It wasnt a hit but it sold well enough. Also the people making Killzone are being funded by Sony, their situation is diffrent than most game devs. Other than Killzone, I'd like you to name a game where the first part sol badly and still made a sequel. Killzone is an exception. Seriously I dont understand your logic, sales are the entire reason a game is made, they are anything but irrelevant.

Also tons of bugs? I beat the game twice, no bugs. The force unleashed has bugs, the game crashed on me twice and I phased through a wall 3 times, each time forcing me to start back at the previous checkpoint. That game was buggy, AC had almost no bugs. I dont know maybe it was just my playthroughs were really lucky, but I encountered no glitches.

          Final Blade Oct 15, 08
Just because you didn't encountered any personally, doesn't mean the game didn't have bugs. IIRC, there was gamegrep articles that stated both the PS3 and 360 versions of AC had bugs and glitches which forced AC to get a patch, and even then still had some. And TFU still I haven't encountered any myself but that doesn't mean there wasn't any.

For my point, the sales means nothing cause storm pretty much stated why I was surprised. From the various forums(not just neo) I regularly go to, many have experienced tons of bugs, maybe you was a lucky one with some others, but the game did have bugs and glitches.

He was surprised because he thought they werent going to make a sequel because of the reactions and obviously the fact that the game is in production pretty much much makes his argument null and void.

The only thing I hope is like Storm said the repetitive nature is gone. As Zero and X said I never had a bug or glitch in my whole AC experience I played the game 3 times for fun. I just want more diversity in the game next time and variety. Overall I thought it was a really great game and I loved it.
