LucasArts popped the cork on their upcoming BioWare co-developed MMO set in the KOTOR universe, Star Wars: The Old Republic. The game will allow players to become Sith or Jedi initiates (or other unannounced classes) and is said to be heavily story-based. More to come.
LucasArts and BioWare, a division of Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: ERTS), today announced the development of Star Wars®: The Old Republic, a story-driven massively multiplayer online PC game set in the timeframe of the Star Wars®: Knights of the Old Republic franchise. Star Wars: The Old Republic, being developed and published by BioWare and LucasArts, represents an innovative approach to interactive entertainment, featuring immersive storytelling, dynamic combat and intelligent companion characters.
In Star Wars: The Old Republic, players will explore an age thousands of years before the rise of Darth Vader when war between the Old Republic and the Sith Empire divides the galaxy. Players can choose to play as Jedi, Sith, or a variety of other classic Star Wars roles, defining their personal story and determining their path down the light or dark side of the Force. Along the way, players will befriend courageous companions who will fight at their side or possibly betray them, based on the players actions. Players can also choose to team up with friends to battle enemies and overcome incredible challenges using dynamic Star Wars combat.

We're supposed to care that a franchise with one of the highest rated games of all time getting an MMO doesn't interest you because you're a fanboy?
Sorry just because Im a star wars fan(big one) doesn't mean im going to get excited that a MMO is on a platform I don't own. But of course I'd expect replies like this from you and others who clearly don't understand anything.
Thats like someone who owns a 360 that doesn't have money at the moment or for a long time, getting excited over LBP which is on the PS3. Yea I don't see many getting excited over it. Just shut up and accept the fact not everyone is going to bend over excited for games on platforms they don't own.
And me being a big star wars fan, that doesn't have much money(still) for a 360, isn't going to get excited. If this was going multiplatform at some point then i'll be excited then, but at the current time im not. Get off my back.
Especially with this and that star trek one too.
As for the news, I sort of feel like it's a hit in the crotch. Not finishing the story as an RPG in the first person really takes the charm of the first and second games out of the equation. I loved the games because it was an RPG, not because it could be an MMO in the future. Many sites have been saying that this will entirely replace the KotOR series, which means that we will never get a chance at an MMO.
Not surprisingly, response to this decision has been very negative across the net, I wonder how Bioware will react to that? At the very least, I hope the experience they got from Mass Effect and MMO ventures will provide a steady base for this game. They have a chance to make an excellent MMO here, I only hope they capitalize on the "beyond the outer rim" stuff they had in the first two KotORs to create a third RPG game in the gap that they have created of, what, 300 years?
I have a wicked urge to egg the front office of Bioware, since I can now, living in the same city as the HQ, if they do decide to totally cut out the RPGs, lol!
