As a non-EA forum user, this news effects me very little. However, I can't imagine what hell it would be if I couldn't check the Rock Band leaderboards.

Your forum account will be directly tied to your Master EA Account, so if we ban you on the forums, you would be banned from the game as well since the login process is the same. And you'd actually be banned from your other EA games as well since its all tied to your account. So if you have SPORE and Red Alert 3 and you get yourself banned on our forums or in-game, well, your SPORE account would be banned to. It's all one in the same, so I strongly reccommend people play nice and act mature.

All in all, we expect people to come on here and abide by our ToS. We hate banning people, it makes our lives a lot tougher, but its what we have to do.

Didn't they just refute this same argument a few weeks ago when there was the big outlash against Spore's DRM?

Now all of the sudden they turn around and are like "hey, that's actually a good idea!"

I'm getting fed up with EA -and honestly am never going to purchase another PC game from them again. Their business practices are more than dodgy as of late - and I know I'm not alone in thinking that.
    From the site staff:
    quote
but it's clearly stated in our "Terms of Service" that your actions on the forums can impact your in-game status. Your forum account is tied to your EA account, that's not for a bad reason, it's so we can tie all your stats and profile and such together.
I understand the concept- but that really is a ridiculous ToS to have.

    And from what I've read...

    quote
    > Are you really that naive? People come to EA forums
    > to complain. And then they are introduced with mods
    > who delete posts which are "negative". You mods ****
    > off people, and then you ban them. I can see a lot of
    > justice murders happening on the forums with mods
    > like you CommanderT. I hope you are not a mod on the
    > new forums.
    and
    quote
    > And you deleting this post (watch this spot guys, CT
    > will delete it soon) just proves my point = negative
    > complaint post = deleted at EA "happy land" forums.
    quote
In no circumstances will I purchase another EA game while this kind of customer relationship exists. It is simply unconscionable for a business to expect people to willingly waive so many of their rights and privileges as customers. I shall withhold all of my business until EA repudiates this audacious expansion of DRM, and the intertwining of DRM and forum control.
    quote
I can't remember where, but I seem to remember something going to court a while back, where the court ruled that EULA's were not binding contracts and not "legal" in the sense that they have any legal merit. (as opposed to being "illegal", meaning you can't have one.) I have to look for it. There were several reasons, but I think one of them was the fact that you can't have someone agree to something after the fact. There is no way to "agree" to a EULA, without buying and installing the product, which means, even if you read and understand the whole thing, you still can't return it, because noone takes back opened games.

Provided this is only used for the more extreme cases of abuse, I'm all for it. If you're going to purposefully be a pain on the forums just because you can and want to disrupt the enjoyment of others, I welcome any notion to have you removed from anywhere in which you could be a nuisance to other players. The fewer idiotic childish trolls there are in the gaming world, the better.

    quote
The way it works is to get a full account lock you have to have broken the rules excessively or extreemly on either the forums or the game. thats no different from these forums, they can still ban you from the game from what you do on here if they see fit. As long as you post normally and dont spam attack the forums, be incredibly racist and crude and attack people left right and centre you wont have any issues.
    quote
...if it was a first offence the most you would get is a week suspension or a warnign anyway
The vast majority are well behaved and are more than capable of discussing, chatting and complaining without using profane language. This should only affect those who think it's their duty to annoy as many people as possible on the Internet.

Note I said extreme cases. I do not agree with this process happening for someone who took an argument a bit too far to the offensive side, or who spammed slightly too much. I would be shocked if EA really responded to minor offences with a blanket ban from everything, and if the posts above (by a moderator) hold true, it shouldn't happen. People seem to be reading this as "One wrong move and you're gone for good" which isn't the case, unless that one wrong move is one heck of a firework show.

I agree with you, that im all for this for those deliberate trouble makers like trolls, spammers or flamers; Hell even those annoying(14-younger) kids on XBL or PSN talking smack and using offensive terms over on multiplayer.

I really find it so strange that EA is going more and more draconian while every other company out there is going more and more open. If I bought a game, I can say what I want about it dammit.

Ban them from the freaking forums. That's it. Why affect their gaming account? Why attach them in the first place?

I know some people are childish and stupid, but they paid for the freaking game, with the added privilege of using the forums. It's as simple as that.

All the downsides I see to this stem from potential abuse of power by EA forum administrators/moderators. What's the stop one of them from banning the creator of a thread meant to serve as constructive criticism or bringing light to a certain issue ?

      Final Blade Oct 31, 08
Why would the creator of the thread be banned? If the topic spiral's out of control the creator shouldn't be banned, its the users who caused the spiraling. This is talking about trouble makers not regular good members trying to help the community. People are jumping to conclusions here.

News flash: looks like this been solely a matter of a over-zealous moderator trying to intimidate people.

EA heard about it and put the dude in line. They have now officially said that they will not ban people from playing the games if you get banned from the forums.

Tis a shame I may add. All those high profile flamers, trolls and idiots will be able to play the game online to annoy everyone.
