Square Enix on Designing North American Box Art

Wolfwood | April 27, 2007 | News | DS
1UP had a chance to speak with Square Enix over the design process behind cooking up the box art for localized game titles. While the box art for the recently released Final Fantasy Fables: Chocobo Tales was used as the springboard for discussion with Square Enix's manager of marketing communications, the company's pointers are applicable to many of their other key franchises like Final Fantasy.
Our primary concerns when designing a package are the level of maturity for many of our art assets, style, recognition of artwork, and the fun factor. At the end of our design exploration, we ask ourselves if the package design meets our standards based on these guidelines and will it be acceptable by the developers who created the game.

Our tactic with every coversheet is to capture the consumers' attention with the front art and to lead them to seek more information about the game on the back art. The back is typically used to feature the key selling points of the game with accompanying screenshots. For this title, our main selling points were the vast amounts of mini/microgames, exciting card games, multiplayer compatibility, and familiar Final Fantasy characters. Plus, all the environments on the cover are in-game settings.
