Cliff Bleszinski explains why there isn't and won't be any Gears of War multiplayer betas, open to the public. The article describes why the beta program works and sometimes, why it doesn't.

A beta does kill the initial thrill of release day, sure. If you've already played the game in a beta - for free, no less - you might not have the same enthusiasm for the final retail product as someone who hasn't played it at all. Well, you might. Depends on how good the actual game is and how much content there is in addition to the beta material.

Though there is the whole otherside, the people who do buy a game based on a demo/beta, I don't think those numbers compare to the amount of people who wouldn't buy a game over a beta.

World at War comes to mind for me, I am very glad I was able to participate in the beta, now I know to steer clear of that game and stick with CoD4.

What's wrong with World at War?

It is basically a CoD4 map pack/reskin/mod that will cost you $60.

If I didn't have CoD4 already, there is a chance I would consider buying WaW, but.. meh, not even then really. The guns are lame. Maps and dogs are cool, it isn't a complete disappointment.. but I already own the superior product, CoD4.

I actually understand what this guy is talking about, I deliberately don't go into Beta's of games I like so that I enjoy the final product more. Still most games should have a Beta or a demo, that way people have a choice or not.

not having a beta might cause problems with the tons of people signing on to play it.
