It might be a long way from the 11 million which WoW has been announcing, but it's still a lot for the barely month old Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning, the newest major MMO to hit the scene from Mythic Entertainment! Congratulations on 800,000 active players!

Warhammer Online now has over 800,000 "current players", according to financial result papers for EA.

That's not terribly exciting in itself, as the MMO had just 50,000 fewer players at the start of October. But this does mean numbers are still going up and not - as some stories would have us believe - down.

This will also make Mythic and owner EA a modest but substantial but substantial income, assuming the 800,000 players will fork out GBP 8.99 once the free trial month has run out. Warhammer Online has also sold 1.2 million copies, which is a number that silver-haired fox John Riccitiello recently deemed a success for EA.

Very true, for us old school table top gamers, we were introduced to the very first Warcraft on the PC as a "Warhammer clone" - as close as we were going to get to having that universe come to life in gaming... and for a long time given the lackluster Warhammer titles (up until Dawn of War) it certainly seemed like WoW was as close as we were going to get.

I think they will be able to maintain those numbers, just talking to players there are many that left WarCraft (including me) because their true loyalty lies with Warhammer. Don't get me wrong, Blizzard created their own rich mythos, but... yeah, their "take" on the Tolkein fantasy universe was influenced by the original Warhammer table top and pen and paper games.

      WOOT! GO WARHAMMER!

Yes, that is quite impressive, but not surprising as it is a pretty good game. I'm more interested in seeing what will happen now that the first month is over and folks will have to begin to pay for their subscriptions to the game.

I doubt most people would mind paying for it. WoW seems to have more than enough people willing to splash out dosh to keep playing.

The drop is still likely going to occur. Not everyone out of those 800,000 are going to likely continue after the first "free month". In, like, two or three months, then indications as to what will happen and where things are likely going to go with the game are going to become more apparent, imo.

I have actually heard of players reporting dwindling activity now.
