An interesting article in to how the Y is increasing the activity of children, and doing so through the use of one of the forms of entertainment which is blamed for child obesity - video games.
According to the article, the amount of exercise places which have these built in to their machines is multiplying, encouraging more couch potatoes who love to play video games to turn up at the local gym to best a personal best in more than one way.
The Kuyat children - 11-year-old John and 9-year-old Anna - worked up a sweat the other day at the Upper Main Line YMCA.
The Broomall, Pennsylvania, siblings danced, kickboxed, biked and played tennis - an hour-long marathon that bested their dad's 45-minute routine at the Berwyn fitness center.
It wasn't always this way.
"It was a chore to get them to do 15 minutes" at the Y, David Kuyat said. "Now, I'm waiting on them."
What changed? A couple of months ago, the Y introduced video games.
The once much-maligned staple of couch potatoes has evolved into an exercise siren.

The point isn't that it's a "gimmick", the fact is that it's working and it's improving quality of life for people who previously had problems health-wise due to their interest in gaming. I think it's excellent to hear that this is a trend which is expanding and hopes it continues to have these positive responses.
