It's not everyday that mistakes such as this happen, but when it happens, you can be sure that the gaming community will be all over it, as is the case here. Whilst trying to advertise Windows Vista, Microsoft have unconsciously (we presume) advertised the PlayStation.

The error of course comes in the form of a leaflet published by Microsoft which tells people about playing games on Windows Vista... only the images they use is off kids playing (and seemingly having fun) playing on a PS2.

Why does it have to be an accident? Maybe MS intentionally did that--there's nothing wrong with some healthy competition.

Nothing wrong with some healthy competition? How is advertising their opponent healthy competition?

[Note: See Darknet for Sony's past bungle]

As far as this being a case of advertising the competition, it's the advertising agency that fumbled this with a bad stock photo entirely. The ad seems to be about Vista and I don't recall very many PC titles that allowed for split screen or multi-player options on a single screen. The whole thing is a bit of a flop.

Well said, & honestly I wouldnt be surprised if the advertising agency is receiving some heated phone calls.

I read an article regarding this. It seems like they did more than just flop. They fell over, rolled on the floor while singing kumbaya after inhaling helium. The second part of this ad contained an Apple MacBook.

Blown out of proportion. The average person is going to see 2 children playing with something easily associated with video games (a PS2 controller) and then think about the product being advertised. The fact it is a PS2 controller will not cross most peoples mind.

Agreed. It's a good chuckle for gamers, but I'm pretty sure it's not a big deal for Microsoft in the long run. If it was indeed an accident, someone could be getting a smack on the wrist (or fired) for it.

Its not advertising in a sense. I'm sure sony have had windows or a PC running a MS product on some of their commercials.

Its not like someone is going to go "Hang on!! Is that a PS2!?!? HOLY SHIT THAT MAKES ME WANT TO BUY A PS2!"

Sony's commercials are typically directly related to their TV's or consoles, and none of those feature PCs running Microsoft products.

Even if they did, there's a difference in the fact that most Sony's actually come with Windows installed because Sony isn't competing against Microsoft in the OS field. Microsoft is a direct competitor with Sony in the gaming world, so this is quite a significant gaffe on their part.

Sony did the same thing by taking a screenshot from Forza in a Gran Turismo ad. Calm down, MS haters.

I see Microsoft hate here too. Mostly everyone blowing this out of proportion.

There are plenty of PC controllers that look exactly like PS2 controllers. Is that an actual PS2 controller?

I really don't see the big problem here. Both companies do it. It hasn't hurt them yet. Big deal.

I can't believe they are advertising minesweeper on vista.
I love the line "games may not be availble...", the MS games are old, badly written and time-wasters, not "real games". If thats what they need to push for vista then MS is in bad shape.

What's going to be next Wii showing 360 in a commercial. It is not a big deal. Ever seen those Alltell Wireless commercials? Case closed.
