Chad Kroeger, guitarist and vocalist for Nickelback, wants to you stop playing Guitar Hero, because he feels not enough bands have "put a solid rock-and-roll package together", feeling they are one of the ones that have. As such, he advises you to stop playing the games and start playing instruments.

I could go on a very long rant here, but I'll just say this: yes, you certainly have put together such a package. It's all neat and tidy, that "rock-and-roll" band of yours. Sigh.

Everyone play more Guitar Hero.

On Monday, less than 24 hours before the release of his band's new album, Dark Horse, the Nickelback frontman was sitting inside the Sunset Marquis Hotel in West Hollywood, California, grumbling about what he perceives to be rock and roll's dwindling numbers.

"I feel like there's not enough rock bands out there, especially when we go on the road," said Kroeger, who performs with the Canadian rock outfit on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" on Wednesday night. "It's tough to find other bands out there, because either they're making a record, or they just got done touring. So kids: Start rock bands. Set down the 'Guitar Hero,' learn how to play an actual guitar and start a band, because it's hard to find more bands to put a solid rock-and-roll package together, to get out there. It's getting harder and harder, but I think we've done it."

I put down guitar hero and said FRECK the franchise after rock band 2 pwnt them by allowing me to use my rock band 1 dlc with rock band 2. You don't know how burned I felt realize I wasted $$ on the dlc for Guitar Hero 2 (and 3) and had to swap disks in order to enjoy old songs. LAME!

we use 2 to have "sing like the nickelback guy" contests at work when their songs came on the radio we had in the back. There was never a winner or loser because everyone could sound just like him

Now if this was Mark Tremonti of Alter Bridge/Creed fame then perhaps i would take some notice as he actually has some substance and talent in the music industry but Chad Kroeger is a joke.

My life is scarred by the fact that my music tastes aren't up to the standards all-knowing chautemoc. Please, what bands should those lesser to you be allowed to like? It's frightful to think without you telling the world what is and is not good music we might have been listening to sub par music all along!

      chautemoc Nov 20, 08
Haha, I think everyone should like and listen to whatever they please forever. I just believe bands like Nickelback make us pay a psychic price we are not aware of. I care about you humans, so that's my offering -- noone has to take it and I don't expect anyone to.

Do you want to learn an instrument? Learn one.
Want to emulate playing one in a game? Play the game.
Do your songs sound exactly the same? Then don't lecture about 'rock 'n' roll packages'.

They have more than 1 song. I think they are at either their 5th or 6th studio album. Guitar Hero is good, never played Rock Band. I understand about actual instruments.

      Seproth Nov 22, 08
Yeah, that's true. It doesn't matter who does it. At least if it were Metallica it'd have some stock in it.

With Nickleback it's like, you really shouldn't play simplified versions of other people's songs.

To that I say, well, maybe you shouldn't play simplified versions of real songs.

Try to play a song that doesn't consist of nothing but power chords, then come talk to me. Oh what's that you have accoustic songs? Let's hear it, nope those are just chords you broke apart...try again
      • 1
        Ameer Nov 22, 08
I remember people spewing over Metallica talking about illegal music downloads. It won't matter who gives it; their opinion would be discredited anyway.

Revenger of Wastelan Nov 21, 08
Nickelback are not in a position where they can lecture people about rock n' roll, they are pretty much wannabees with average guitar skills that just somehow got into the mainstream and now no one can get them out. Being a successful rock band and yet singing "we all just wanna be big rockstars" is a very pathetic way of trying to not to drop off the mainstream.

    Livewire_19 Nov 21, 08
Wow there's a lot of Nickleback hate around here, Its just his opinion, some of you are acting like he spit in your face. Why does anybody care what celebrities say?
Also Nicklebacks new album Dark Horse is great.
Everyone has different taste in music so complaining about the music from different bands is kind of lame.
    • 0
Tiger of Wu Nov 21, 08
Don't get us wrong, I don't think anybody is trying to complain about their music or anything, a lot of people here just don't like them, so if they say anything bad about a game of course they'll make some form of insulting yet attemptedly funny comment about them and due to the earlier statement the bad music angle was just a lot easier then anything else.

I mean, if a good rock band said it people would do the same, just instead of going on about bad music they'd go on about something else. If you like Nickelback it's fair enough, just try not to get offended by jokes about them from random internet people
      • 2
        Seproth Nov 22, 08
        Nope, their music is awful.

Seriously, any one of you...pick up a guitar. You'll be playing any Nickleback song by the end of the week.

Now Steve Vai, Satriani, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, etc... That takes time, it's hard.

Seriously, going to watch a Nickleback concert is like paying some random dude to paint you a picture. It'd be shit, and you could probably match the quality on your own...so you wouldn't do it. You'd buy one from somebody who is actually good at painting.

In the words of Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree

        "Hear the sound of music
        Drifting in the aisles
        Elevator prozac
        Stretching on for miles

        The music of the future
        Will not entertain
        It's only meant to repress
        And neutralise your brain

        Soul gets squeezed out
        Edges get blunt
        Demographic
        Gives what you want

        Now the sound of music
        Comes in silver pills
        Engineered to suit you
        Building cheaper thrills

        The music of rebellion
        Makes you wanna rage
        But it's made by millionaires
Who are nearly twice your age

One of the wonders of the world is going down
        It's going down I know
It's one of the blunders of the world that no-one cares
        No-one cares enough"

It's about how record companies figure out what people like, and just sign shit that sounds the exact same.

Which is why Linkin Park exists, because Limp Bizkit was successful. It's why 3 days grace, Hinder, Nickleback, and Staind all exist...becuase they're *bleep*ing identical and no one seems to care, hence it's the blunder of the world that no one cares.

          Livewire_19 Nov 22, 08
I like Linkin Park, 3 Days Grace, Hinder, Nickleback, and Staind.
Steve Vai, Satriani, Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera on the other hand mean absolutely nothing to me. You can't expect everyone to have the same opinion as you on music. This argument is really pointless.

Tiger of Wu Nov 22, 08
Okay then... don't get the majority of us wrong, others however believe their opinion is gospel. Either way Livewire, if you like Nickelback, like 'em. If other people don't like you liking Nickelback, then tough shit to them.

I think we're pretty much on the same page..however you do seem to be implying basically more skill=more substance which I don't agree with...some of my favourite songs are very simple..but they're very soulful.

Downloaded that song by the way..quite good!

Stuff like Satriani is great if you like music and sports combined..personally I don't..

I think you guys misunderstand me. I'm saying you really shouldn't like them...but if you do. It really doesn't matter. If you like it, then listen to it. Do what feels right to you.

My point is that, as musicians, they aren't impressive. So his opinion about how other people should deal with music means exactly jack shit to me.

I, for example, think they should continue trying to become better musicians rather then just continue doing what made them who they are, you should evolve as you grow as a musician. However, I'm not about to send him an email about how bad he sucks and what he should be doing. It's ultimately his choice. So I feel we as gamers, should have the same respect shown to us. Let us choose.

Also, assuming Gothic Girl is correct below me. I'm fine with that, if he thinks he can influence people to start playing music...that's great. I fully agree with him. I can play four instruments myself. I just feel he could have said "Just pick up a guitar and play" and that would have been adequate.

Why the *bleep* should people care though? News flash, ALL music sounds the same. Not just nickleback's. I'm sure there are 1000 people reading this that have a hard on for coheed and cambria and hate nickleback, but the irony is that all of coheed's songs sound the same too. All music from any particular artist sounds the same. Where does this faggot who says nickleback has only one song get off? This asshole is probably the one who has only listened to 3 of their songs on the radio or from his buddies in the hate nickleback circle jerk.

End of the day who gives a *bleep* what music sounds similar to another. If you like the music than like it but if you don't don't find stupid *bleep*ing reasons to attack them.

People like you just piss me off. *bleep*.

Ouch... Some harsh comments here. I don't think the guy from Nickelback was taking a stab at Guitar Hero. He was just pointing out the lack of rock bands they see on tour, and encouraging kids to get out there and create their own band. I didn't get the impression he was being overly agressive or anything.

      Play ISDF Nov 22, 08
Regardless it isn't exactly a fair thing to do. To truly master an instrument it takes dedication, and if you want to remain good at it you need to play regularly. You've gotta kick off with learning about scales then move onto simple stuff and then after that you can hit some of the bigger stuff. That by itself can take say three weeks because you have to learn finger positions and the like on say for instance a guitar and even then there's a good chance you won't be able to do anything terribly difficult and quick. Guitar Hero is different, it's a game you can just pick up and play no matter how good you are. Want to play Scream Aim Fire but haven't drummed ever? Play on beginner and you can't lose basically. Know how to sing Re-Education Through Labor real well since it's your favourite song? Pick up the mic and put it on expert. I got Guitar Hero World Tour five days ago and I had never ever played a GH game before, I'm already playing some songs on expert on the lead guitar. If I wanted to play Rooftops as well as I did on expert today but on a real guitar, it would definitely take me some time to do.

I don't think Nickelback get the fact that the majority of people aren't interested in learning how to play a real instrument. Most people just want to have fun.

    Final Blade Nov 22, 08
I see no difference in what they said to what you edited to make it adequate Seproth? What they're saying, as Gothic Girl alluded to was stop playing guitar hero, a game that isn't real, and pick up a real instrument and play a real guitar.

Personally I love Nickelback and couldn't care what any haters have to say, but I really feel some of you are taking this the wrong way.
    • 0
      Seproth Nov 22, 08
I'm saying there was really no reason to bring Guitar Hero into it. There's room for both.

I'm starting to think they're upset because they aren't featured in the game(as far as I know)

I would never have expected Nickelback to get so annoyed about Guitar Hero.
