Sonic Unleashed recently hit most major platforms just last month, and while critics say its better than previous titles, it still isn't the next gen Sonic everyone is hoping for. One of the main reasons labeled by critics are the Werehog sections, where you trade speed for strength and bash the hell of Dr Eggman's minions brawler style. Apparently these levels sucked, so why were they included? Because according to one Sonic Unleashed developer Sonic's most liked feature, his speed, makes level crafting incredibly hard.

"I asked one of the developers at TGS, you know I was like, come on everybody just wants Sonic running, like whats up with the werehog? And he was like, well, heres the deal... he runs at this miles per hour, kilometers per hour, and he laid out all of the statistics on how fast this hedgehog goes, and he was like In order to make a game where Sonic is running and everybody enjoys the whole thing we'd have to design this many miles of level, and it was some ungodly number. And he's like and that would be like maybe a three hour game and I was like wow, well that kinda stinks and he's like yeah, so we gotta do this other stuff."

I love Sonic and all the Sonic games I have played. The recent ones look good too. I think a lot of people complain about originals, like the original Pokemon games.

I think they suck because they gave Sonic & Co. voices and changed the whole style of the game. 2-D platforming Sonic games were awesome.

you know what, *bleep* that. that's a cheap excuse. hire more level designers, or something. if they did it on the genesis, they can do it on the xbox/ps3/wii. cut out the intricate background doodads and whatnot.

i understand the plight. the levels need to be pretty big. but look at the sonic heroes. those levels were perfectly fine. BUT they were wore down with shitty 'team' mechanics. sonic rivals. even better. those levels are just fine in length, and sonic is as fast as ever. why cant we just get something like those with some enemies thrown into the mix?

this is a lame ass excuse if i've ever heard one. sega is washed up, out of ideas, and just stubbornly reluctant to give the fans the simple oldschool-rooted sonic game that they want, and deserve after all these years of total shit.

they need to just admit that their horrible ideas of tacking these jackass gimmicks onto every sonic game ever ruins the game.

Not only that, but I just saw a commercial for Sonic Unleashed...There is no excuse for what they did.

Not exactly, Sonic's speed is easy to develop 2D levels for, but not 3D.

        @Big A2

Then why not make a sonic game 3d but a side scroller kind of way. Kind of like LBP, just instead sonic. Basically what im saying is make the same concept of the old games, instead amp the graphics to 3d, and make te ILLUSION of going fast.

Then it becomes a 2D game, like New Super Mario Bros, and it would be awesome.

This is what I've been crying out for for several years. This is what they should do.

That's not an excuse. If that's the case, don't make the levels fully 3D.

No. Better yet, do something Megaman 9 style, or Paper Mario-esque. We won't have to deal with all this "lol too muchh 3dddddadhd" bullshit. And, maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to like Sonic games again.

The genesis had sprite backgrounds and obstacles and enemies that repeated and had different skins.

Sonic Unleashed Levels are fully detailed, have unique enviromental architecture(in 3-D,no sprites in sight), and the speed at which sonic goes(up to 300mph) would indeed make a level atleast 5 minutes at most. The 360/ps3 probably cannot handle massively massive levels for sonic to run and attack through.

Of course! Sonic games suck because of their main gimmick! God, I'm relieved!

Why cant they make the 3D Sonic games similar to the Sonic Adventure games on the dreamcast? Upgraded graphics ofcourse, but similar controls, a new simple story line, diferent, but not so diferent scenaries, and there you have it, a awsome new generation Sonic game. Instead of looking for new features, they sould look at what made Sonic the Hedgehog so great.

That.... I can't believe a dev confessed this at TGS...

ALL I WANT IS SPEED! I WANT 100,000 MILES OF OLD SCHOOL SONIC RING COLLECTING MAYHEM!

Sorry for the caps, but I am really really bitter and PO'd at what Sega is allowing to happen to sonic... because they don't want to design X-amount of levels and length?? WTF!?!?!

Why can't they just get rid of Sonic!?!?! The series is no longer successful! Face the facts!

Despite the lack of recent successful titles, "Sonic" represents a prized brand/property in the SEGA lineup, and it would be foolish to simply kill off a brand that has generated so much revenue for them without trying to revitalize it. Unfortunately it looks like chimps have been developing the most recent Sonic games.

Milk a cow until it can't be milked no more. Apparently, hedgehog mammaries hold a lot more milk than cows'.

What i would love them to do is get rid of everything that made Sonic work in 2D as it's not working in 3D. I am not saying give him armour, an AK-47 and stick him in Iraq but take away the rings, they worked in 2D but they don't work here, take away the gimmicks he is a hedgehog and he has no friends so get rid of them too.

I think Sonic could do well in the 3D arena if they just focus on the story, make that solid and make the gameplay work well. I don't care if the story revolves around Sonic losing his speed, that will solve their problem right there but i think the main issue with Sonic is the transition from 2D to 3D has never quite worked. If they re-invent Sonic and change their focus then it could work but right now Sonic was not made for 3D and they haven't changed the core gameplay to suit that new environment.

What in *bleep* are you talking about??

Are you telling us to get rid of everything that made 2D Sonics successful, and try and innovate the 3D Sonics even more?? You've got to be shitting me.

Well, since 2D Sonic in 3D sucks so much, why not just overhaul the whole series? It could work.

Sonic is still the old school SNES game we all used to play.
All you do is run all over the place, collect rings to survive and fight.

Except that it's no side-scroller, it's too third-dimensional, and there are too many new, creative, "amazing and revolutionary" ideas being thrown into the game like a hundred pounds of meat being thrown onto a fat lion's face.

Sonic was never an SNES game.

Although the statement was implying that he was referring to the golden days of Sonic. I suppose in this conversation, whether or not it was on the SNES - yes, you are right that it was not - is irrelevant.

Its a SEGA(Genesis console) caracter, not a SNES(Nintendo) caracter. Nintendo's caracter is Mario

I tried out the latest Sonic game at a friend's house (who rents games), and I did like the speedy gameplay...but why the hell would they change the tone of it to that warehog? Fast to slow-paced gameplay isn't what I want in a Sonic game.

Nostalgia strikes nerves with these Sonic games, but meh...a mascot is a mascot. Hopefully we'll see some stand-out titles involving Sonic soon.

What I find hilarious is how some people talk as if they're developers.

Seriously I love the new Sonic game, and could careless what all the haters have to say. I think what's change isn't the game but the fans. They're all to spoiled with the old and not accepting how awesome some of the current games are. While a few haven't hit the insanely fun of the old, to say the new ones aren't fun is stupid.
