It appears that over at the IT Month Fair in Taipei, Pioneer showed off the massive disc. It's a 16-layer Blu-ray disc which is 400GB. And better still DigiTimes has reported that these are compatible with Blu-ray readers already on the market! Say hello to 400GB PS3 games. Hopefully it includes the PS3 which means a whole new era of games. Currently, it's said to hit mass production sometime between now and 2010, sadly rewritable versions won't be around till 2010 to 2012.

Pioneer is exhibiting its super multi-layer read-only optical disc which features 16 separate layers on a single side with 25GB storage capacity on each layer for a total capacity of 400GB at the IT Month fair taking place in Taipei.

according to konami, and rumors, they were going to make MGS4 bigger and better....longer even.
its only a like a 7 hour game if you skip every cutscene. otherwise its like 15-20 hours.

I was just thinking Metal Gear Solid 5, i mean Kojima is probably having a giggle fit right now. If he was unhappy with 50Gb then he's gonna fill 400 lol.

It's all possible, though i think even that would annoy so many if it happened. 7 hours of gameplay 120 hours of video lol.

Maybe I shouldn't have bought that 500GB hard drive last night

I would be careful with the harddrives. I heard that if it goes to high of an RPM it could damage it.

Bloody hell, the *bleep*ing disc has more space on it than the majority of hard drives. If devs use this, they have no excuse to have any installation on the hard drive at all.

How so? As far as i know having a larger capacity doesn't make the disc read speed any better.

Plus it must be hella expensive.

If the dudes at Naughty Dog and Insomniac can make games without installation, I don't see why other companies do especially if theres so much info on the disc. I am not too knowledgable about this stuff, but aren't games supposed to be read from the disc?

Great, more space. Now how about an efficient disc drive that can read them quickly without sounding like a meat-grinder. Even if the PS3 so happened to be able to read those discs, what does it help making a game that big, the installation would be INSANELY LONG, not to mention it would take up AN INSANE AMOUNT OF SPACE, and then afterwards the loading times would STILL BE INSANELY LONG.

The PS3 only has a 2x Blu-ray reader (which by the way, you subtract installation from that, and you get WTF loading times). Think twice when you rejoice in more space.

      Fatal Error Dec 4, 08
I'm fairly certain they aren't talking about any use for it on the PS3, although a 2x Blu-Ray drive is only a slight bit slower than the DVD drive in the 360 in terms of data transfer rate. It's more about the functionality of having such large amounts of space available on a single disc that can be carried around and placed in any Blu-Ray player for use.

More Space does not mean longer load times, or longer install times either. It should all remain about the same, unless the Devs themselves decide to put more in an installation.

Most of my games do not have installation like many others play . . . and the load times? I don't even notice them too often. The only one I ever notice is the now-old Sonic the Hedgehog for PS3. Those load times . . . horrendous. So . . . larger-capacity discs do not automatically mean longer laoding/installation.

Maybe someday, you can make an infinite game. Like WoW on a console. XD

I actually would love a seemingly never-ending game . . . I think it's possible on a console too. I mean, just write the code to generate random quests/storylines. First have them go through a hundred or so regular missions/storylines premade . . . then start generating random ones. Random down to the smallest part too, so that it seems entirely different (not randomly putting together big pieces so that you know what to do and can tell they are just random pieces). Make the AI learn from the player, and respond correctly, even have the AI create the missions based on the player's actions.

Hm . . . I wonder what kind of a game that would be. . . ( Imagine those who try to speed through games by gaming-binges! Though I can see in the news, Death by Gaming headlines everywhere )

Oh yeah, because I would love to play games with storylines that were written by a random generator.

Just imagine, everything would just be "*blank* goes to *blank* to *blank* to *blank* *blank* and *blank*".

          HisServant77 Dec 5, 08
Haha, Well that's just it, it would be done in a manner that the AI is able to produce well-done storylines, and even better, also based on the actions of the player throughout the game. Not just some pieces slapped together, but done to the smallest points, that they go well together too.

    Final Blade Dec 4, 08
It's virtually impossible at this current time to make any game on that 16 layer BD. Well for the PS3 rather, not to mention what's the point. Cool though. This would be awesome for storage space.

This just in: Metal Gear Solid 5 will have 875GB of data to be put on a 400GB disc.

Yeah, but when would that game come out? In the year 2011 or 2012?
