When 14 copies of Animal Crossing: Wild World were sent out to MTV Multiplayer and Kotaku by Nintendo, they weren't expecting a "strong racial slur" to be repeated during conversations with in-game character Barbara, but that's what happened. Nintendo has issued an apology on the matter, explaining it got in the game via the wireless function. Interesting..wouldn't someone from the company had to have been the source?

Well, it's only as "bad" as the photo you see here, one could suppose..

"Previously played copies of the 2005 DS game Animal Crossing: Wild World were sent to 14 members of the media to demonstrate the ability of players to transfer items to the new Animal Crossing: City Folk for Wii. We regret that an offensive phrase was included without our knowledge via a wireless function that allows user-generated catchphrases to spread virally from one game to the next. This version is limited to 14 copies created for media review purposes only and is not available at retailers. We sincerely apologize for the incident and are working with media who received the game cards to return them to Nintendo immediately."

This is a surprising slip-up from the family-friendly company with what is perhaps its most family friendly game, but at least they admitted to their mistake immediately. 1UP also received a copy of the DS cartridge and has been asked to return it.

I know it's not about the picture, but that one is pretty old. I remember using it in my old caption contest thread.

Of course you didn't see it. It was only in special review copies for press only. And apparently, the word came from transferred data from used AC: Wild World games.

Probably had something to do with the Nazi sign in the picture.

But isn't it Nintendo's fault for not allowing the word to not be used as a phrase in the game? Can't they cut that stuff out?

"Apparently the staff member taught one of the characters the urban term “n—a.” Stephen Totilo understands that the staff member may not have meant to offend anyone saying, “It’s clearly meant more as a hip-hop slang greeting.”"

    ahahahha. awesome.

I always thought Barret would bust that word out. He seemed like a character based on stereotype.

LoL it looks funny for an Animal Crossing game

Nintendo shouldn't be apologizing though =\ It isn't their fault that racist users sent in the slurs.

Maybe not entirely, but in most games like this (particurly ones with multiplayer and intended for kids) a block should be put in for words like these.

See how Nintendo is sensitized by this? Other consoles just let it roll away.

Yeah, but little kids play Animal Crossing. If Nintendo doesn't apologize the public will think they're evil like Disney.
