X-Play's Best of 2008 awards

X-Play has a video up detailing the best games of 2008. Sure, it ain't over yet, but it seems like the best of it done with. Oddly, Fable II wins game of the year, but is beaten by Fallout 3 for RPG of the year. Huh?

Other categories include Best Handheld Game, Best Action/Adventure Game, and Best Music/Rhythm Game.

    X-play...Xbox? Hmmm I'm sorry but Fable II as GOTY? Every game nominated with Fable II beats it hands down and considering that Fallout 3's developers didn't lie about the content within the game...sorry about half the content. So how the hell has Fable won GOTY exactly?

    Sure it looks good and sounds good but from what I heard, that's all it is...good...not great, not amazing and certainly not Game of the year

    ShadowJ...relax. Do they put X-Play episodes on the G4 site? You should watch the episode to get a better judgement as to why they chose Fable II. I saw it last night, and I honestly couldn't argue with that.

    No they aren't X-box fanboys or anything. -_-

    Decent list. MGS4 took home quite a few awards, and I was happy that The World Ends With You was nominated in a few categories, winning best handheld game of 2008.

    Looking at the results, I'm actually really surprized. Gears of War 2 and GTA4 didn't take many awards home. Happy about anything going to MGS4, and as much as I love Fable II, Guns of the Patriots dominates it.

      This time, no. Because the last time they did it, the voters were 85% 360 owners. This was more done by the X-Play team.

        Ah, alright then, I'm suprised Fable 2 beat Fallout 3. Its fun, but just doesnt really have longevity, and its easy simply because its not hard, and they dont seem to try to make it harder.

        As for their 'lies' Lionhead didnt really lie, but what they said isnt how they made it sound either. Take the time system, they said you could plant a seed and after X amount of years it would be a tree, you do that in the game for the golden acorn and tree of life in one town.

    Decent list, but I'm suprised to see Fable II as GOTY and Brawl not even mentioned.

      Heh, Brawl as GOTY?

      Brawl is worse than Melee, maybe it should get the award for being worse than its previous title?

        I said I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned. And hell, I'd nominate it for GOTY over Fable II any day. They had Too Human in best multiplayer games. THAT'S why I'm surprised to not see Brawl -.-.

        It's all a matter of opinion.

        I like it more because of the no tiers and slower gameplay
        and heck, it is like 2 games in one with SSE
        which wasnt All that great, but still okay.

        Fable II sucked...really bad...A waste of my beautiful 60$

          Oh sure, this isn't fanboy-ism...did you actually see the show, or are just jumping the gun here? The results will not satisfy everyone, but at least watch the show to get some insight on the choices.

    Hey, fine by me. I'm a pretty big fan of Fable II, so I think it really deserved X-Play's GotY award.

      Same, and by hearing there reasons for it, I found it hard to argue with them.

      One of the best parts was having Peter appear via satellite to 'accept' the award. He mentions two projects that his team's working on, and hopes to shed some more light on them in '09. Can't wait.

    Fable II is an excellent game, and its one I can always pick up and have fun with.

    GG Lionhead, you deserve it for making a quality game.

    How am I a fanboy? I can like whatever game I want, being a fanboy is claiming the games or consoles you like are "the best, pwn all" or something. I DID watch the video, and no review scores or GOTY awards are going to make me say "wow, now that I see Fable II got GOTY it's sooo fun! and Brawl, psh, it didn't get anything, so I should just completely change my opinion about it..."

    Fable II was awesome so the award is well deserved.
    I found it much more ENJOYABLE to PLAY than MGS4, as that felt like a long, long interactive movie.

    Not knocking MGS4 though, it took hope some awards and rightfully so, its awesome. My opinion anyway

    I think what people forget about these days is replay value. Fable II had Shit for replay value, since im a fan of the series i was dissapointed. But whatever, I lost intrest in XPLAY anyway. I dont care, i play Animal Crossing Shiity Folk, lol

      You can say that about any game. Replay value is really hard to come by with single player games...but then there's the multiplayer aspects, which isn't something that Fable II shines it, but it could be worse.

      You lost interest in X-Play from this? Or just in general, because the shows have gotten better, imo.

          Not entirely...see with action/adventure titles, though very entertaining for me, I play it once, maybe twice, and then that's it. With 'replay value,' it's not about playing the game only, it's about playing the game over. Single player would tend to get boring after some time, especially on your second-third playthough, because you know what's going to happen, know the obstacles, etc..

          Sure, OoT is a memorable game, one of my all-time favorites, but replay value? Multiplayer games such as SSB, as you mentioned, have more say in that.
