Remaking a 14 year-old game isn't as easy as one might think, seems like. Turns out Capcom nearly cancelled Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix due to the redrawn art, which was thrown out, after which they brought in a new team of artists.

Lead designer David Sirlin revealed in a recent interview the pressure from the gaming community may have led to its eventual release. Maybe rumours have a legitimate purpose after all.

When asked if he ever felt that Capcom might cancel the game, Sirlin told VideoGamer.com: "Yeah that was a possibility. It felt the most possible during that first phase during the art that we had to throw away. It was unspoken but everyone just knew it that if that art wasn't going to work out then maybe they were going to cancel the whole thing. And turns out they didn't. I wonder if there was just so much pressure from the outside that kept them going, I mean from the world of gaming. Everyone knew about the project by then."

    Interesting.

"but everyone just knew it that if that art wasn't going to work out then maybe they were going to cancel the whole thing. "

Hmm, was it really just the artists and assets, or fears of this taking steam away from SF4... Perhaps even more interesting, worries about keeping an art style consistent with the new game?

All musings that this article dismisses, but still

But the guys from Udon are artistic gods! Well, not really, but they are damn good. I didn't think the art was being judged so harshly as to nearly cancel the game...I think it looks great.

Right. I would like to see the draw-ups that were thrown out of the window to compare.

        That's really up for interpretation.

But I don't think it was the art as much as SF4.
