We've seen this year have some awesome titles for all 3 consoles, especially PS3 getting some great sales. But apparently according to CNN PS3 is dying by the hands of 360 and can't compete.
Reasons are PS3 is too expensive, and it also being a blu-ray player and no one wants hi def movies, although that sounds extremely skeptical based off Blu-ray being the number 1 electronic this holiday season. The last reason is PS3 has no must buy titles, LBP generated Buzz but isn't a game changer and neither is Sony's Home.
So what's the solution....wait for it.....Ah that's right massive price cuts. Like we didn't see that one coming. <rolleyes>

So, do you think he has any merit to these claims, or is it just another elaborate fanboyish exaggeration? You decide.

Sony's (SNE) PS3 is dying on the shelves.

Alone among the three major videogame consoles, sales of the PS3 are down about 19% from November 2007, according to the latest stats from the NPD Group. Sony was only able to sell 378,000 PS3s this November, compared to 466,000 last year.

And the problem for Sony isn't the recession, it's the PS3. Microsoft (MSFT) put up respectable numbers with its Xbox 360, selling 836,000 units vs 777,000 in November 2007. And Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii continues to dominate the market, more than doubling sales from 981,000 to 2.04 million.

So why is the PS3 flopping so badly?

1. It's the most expensive console on the market, $150 - $200 more than its rivals. Even if you believe the video game industry is "recession-proof" (it isn't), a tanking economy makes consumers more price-conscious.

I make no apologies for saying that the Xbox 360 is a better console for me, and it gives me the best (although not the most polished arguably) experience.

I do not think the PS3 is being killed by the 360 though. I do believe the recession does play a part in its decline; I mean chaos or not, consumers who were intending to buy an entertainment console will still do so. They may just go cheaper.

I'd like to see a report of this nature in exactly 1 year from now. I bet you things will change. My prediction is that 2009 will see the PS3 dominate in software sales and more units will be shifted because of its soon to be superior libary. Thats my opinion of course, others will understandably see it differently.

I agree with you 100%, while I love Blu-ray, I can't help but see the logic in selling my PS3 on Craigslist. Plus I can use money from the sale and buy a blu-ray player and still come out on top.

I understand the PS3 is the perfect system for a lot of people; but for me, MGS4 is the only thing keeping the system, and it isn't worth $400.

I agree with you completely Killosity. I still believe that the rumor of a Eu price cut is true, regardless of what Sony says.

I don't agree with Absolute in his "logic" in selling, but that's his opinion for his own needs, so it's all fine.

The point you missed was, since they called Obama winning by miles, they must be right about the game industry as well. And I was responding to someone else, I didn't need you to chime in with a statement I know of.

Actually, I retract my earlier statement, as I lied. I did see your point. I hope you were being sarcastic in your original statement when you said "It must be true", because otherwise I'm getting you completely wrong and this argument shouldn't have been started.

But Still. he did win by a land slide. Dont put politics in a video game site, that sparks serious problems.

Seeing as I want to get Blu-ray Movies rather than normal DVD's, I'd say the PS3 is the best medium for me. CNN just like FOX and any other channel know nothing about games. Hell according to them, Mass Effect was a game full of sex and nothing but it, which was built for the "SEXBOX 360".

I don't even have a HDTV yet and I prefer to buy Blu-Ray over DVD.

No one wants Hi-Def? tell that to the tens of millions that have gone out and bought a Hi-Def TV and Blu-Ray player of some form this year alone, Blu-Ray sales are through the roof for a new format. I mean my local store started this year with a section for Blu-Ray that i could count on one hand, now their Blu-Ray section is the largest section in the store second to the Music, it has dominated DVD and Games for shelf space in store. I think everyone wants Blu-Ray and HD some just stuggle to afford it currently.

CNN know nothing about gaming. Even a Sexbox 360 fanboy can't deny that.

Haha too bad for the PS3, looks like it's gonna Crash and Burn. But after reading that article about Sony only using the PS3 for Bluray purposes I wonder if it's really going to make Sony shit bricks.

LOL why is this not the common mentality? Why do people let stuff like this rent space in their head? Just play the games. Your PS3 isn't going to die, you don't need to defend the console against imaginary fanboys attacking it or CNN.

The Sony Company didnt mean for the PS3 to be a solely gaming console.
Most people buy PS3's for blureay, but some people think the shape is awkward and end up buying Panasonic BluRay players ore something. But most parenat see LittleBigPlanet and say, Oh My Gosh, thats so cute, and the family could utilize that....
I hate how the Marketing 4 the PS3 is family.

Um, there is an article from the Washington Post that refutes CNN's fuzzy math - they were compairing apples to oranges:

If only people like that article's author would speak up more often. I'm not saying that just because he's speaking favorably about the PS3; he brings up many good and valid points about why the PS3 is doing considerably better than most ignorantly believe.

In the meantime, I'm with Seeker X; I'm going to just go and play some LBP.

Shoop da whoop. Hang on, what about Metal Gear Solid 4?!?!?! Imo that's anough reason in itself to buy a PS3. Can you please all lay off Sony? It's not as if it doesnt give an enjoyable experience - and lets face it, the Xbox is a fugly console whilst the PS3 is smexy.
