Despite the beta only recently being released, Sony have very high hopes for Playstation Home and what it will do for the PS3's sales. According to Home's European manager, Dan Hill, Playstaion Home will "definitely become a reason to purchase PS3" ...

Dan Hill, Home service manager for Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, thinks it will eventually shift consoles.

"... In time I would say that Home will definitely become a reason to purchase [PS3], he told CVG. "Today, we are at the beginning of a long journey - now is the time to start its evolution."

What? You mean they will actually give Playstation Home advertising space on TV? Cause thats the only way people will buy a PS3 because of this service.

Well, I can see some people being attracted to the idea.

So long as they flesh it out, and advertise it enough, people'll buy into it.

I'd rather they use that money to secure 3rd party exclusives and/or enhance 1st party and 2nd party games....

Pfft weren't MGS4 and LBP supposed to be system sellers?
    • 0
      Red 9 Dec 15, 08
Yes, except that only MGS4 actually managed to sell some consoles, and even then it didn't move all that many in the end. So far none of our games have really been "system sellers", as I haven't seen a single PS3 exclusive game spur an increase in sales.

        Koloth Dec 15, 08
It actually moved a lot it was just short lived. The day MGS4 released the PS3 sales actually spiked past the Wii's. An impressive feat considering neither the PS3 or 360 have outsold the Wii at all since they were released. But it only lasted that one day.

          Red 9 Dec 15, 08
Exactly, one day. Point being while such games as Halo 3 and Gears 2 spurred consistent sale spikes that lasted at least a week, I haven't seen a PS3 game do that for more than the mentioned one day.

The funny part is that the "system sellers" for the 360 seem to have been largely disappointments in terms of actual game quality. The PS3 seems to be having disappointments regarding sales, but not game quality.

          DragoniteBallZ Dec 15, 08
Actually there are many games that were disappointing as far as game quality. That not including the many multiplatform games but I almost never get those on PS3. The only games that were better than I thought they would be is Uncharted, Warhawk and Motorstorm 1. Motorstorm 2 was disappointing, Heavenly Sword was very disappointing, SOCOM was very disappointing(I have been a big SOCOM fan since the first game too).

MGS4 was good but was still overrated. Just like Halo 3, GTA4, the Resistance games and Gears of War 2. That was one of the reasons I got the PS3 although I mainly did because the bundle came with the last PS2 BC 80 gig units. But those games were just good for one playthrough. Gears of War 2 though is an exception. I just have this strange fetish for playing horde just to pop heads.

Much of the "good" PS3 games are considered good because they are a technical marvel. This especially being GTA4 and Heavenly Sword. Perfect examples. They were beautiful as a piece of art but as games they just ruined it for me with sloppy or bland gameplay, horrible targeting system, etc. etc. Warhawk is like the only game that is opposite that. That game is just ugly but it's hella fun.

What the hell are you talking about DBZ?
Heavenly Sword games quality wasn't disappointment. In fact It was outstanding. The only valid complaint I hear is the length and even then I say that's a stretch. God of War is around the same length on average, although it does have more modes.

Well it might just be me but I don't call mindless hack and slashing and button mashing fun gameplay. Maybe it made it a little more interesting than other hack and slash games that there are execution animations. But again, that's just prettiness.

God of War is different because it actually has cohesive gameplay and movements. Heavenly Sword I'm just running around hacking and slashing. As fancy as it gets is an animation or a combo which the game just tells you to press a button and the game does it for you.

He's absolutely right. Why on earth haven't I sold my darn 360 yet? Silly me. Guess I'll continue inflicting self-torture by forcing myself to continue through Fable II or Gears 2 or whatever other games I bought (obviously, my console and corresponding games were purchased with a gun pointed to my head). Oh, cruel world, I can't stop playing these poor quality titles.

Sorry, I thought "quality" was a matter of gamer opinion and personal taste? Guess I was wrong.

Okay, let's get serious. I'm just going to make an observation here, but it looks like the current advertising for Sony and Microsoft goes something like this...

Sony, based on the TV ads I've seen over the past few years, advertise quite heavily with non-exclusive titles. I remember when GTA IV first game out, the telly was flooded with ads for the PS3 version. Even now, there's stuff like Guitar Hero World Tour for the PS3, and Sony's employing the help of retailers like Best Buy to advertise for them -- there are other non-exclusive title adverts of course, I just can't remember them all. Sure they push their exclusives too, but I feel like they're pushing their non-exclusive titles more, which is rather strange. On the other hand, I also think it's weird that Microsoft doesn't seem to be counter advertising...

Recently, Microsoft is pushing that family-friendly image with their Indiana Jones and Kung Fu Panda 360 bundle.

I'm sure over time Home will develop into something.... much better than it is now. But I can't really imagine the PS3 using it as their selling point. Microsoft doesn't use LIVE in its adverts, though gamers and smart consumers can easily learn more about it.

Then again, these corporations don't spend billions on advertising for nothing. Sony will no doubt find some way to spin this one. Perhaps they'll appeal to the casual market as well, playing off social networking communities like MySpace and Facebook?

Edit Just a side note to Koloth's comment, but the 360 also had its one day of glory when its Japanese sales surpassed those of the Wii due to an exclusive J-RPG title -- I forget the name, not a big J-RPG fan. It was some time after MGS4 anyway.

That's the thing. Much of the PS3 games you pick up, beat it, and never play again. Only game that I still play continuously is Warhawk. And also Call of Duty games if you have that on the PS3. That is a game you can keep playing over and over.

Sorry RabidChinaGirl, apparently the overall opinion from the rest of society had nothing at all to do with what I was saying. That's right, was speaking specifically about you, and no one else. I wasn't making a generalization, I was speaking about RabidChinaGirl, everyone.

Brilliant, your methods to try and discredit my own post only served to discredit yours. Simply genius, I'm not sure I could do that.

Gears 2 is largely considered to be a huge disappointment, but it was advertised as a big system seller and that's what it did. Halo 3 was considered to be a disappointment as well, yet it sold a metric shitton of consoles.

The best 360 games aren't even the huge "system sellers". Mass Effect and Fable 2 didn't exactly force consoles out the door and keep people in lines for hours just to get them, but they've actually done well.

I think that was RBC's main point, Fatal Error...everyone knows you were generalizing, but even so, most people think it's cool to say "Gears 2 sucks" so on and so forth...why? Because they over-hype it to death. Me, I barely read up on any big games, just play it when I get it, no spoiling myself, and I thoroughly enjoy it. Big hitters this year like GTA IV, Gears 2, Fable II, etc., they are all amazing games to me.

Another issue gamers have with big games, namely sequels, is that they are "too" different from their predecessors. I'm not going to argue about the nostalgia bit, because I too miss the past years, but if no new features and such are added to the sequels...they'd might as well make expansions or DLC instead.

The 360 doesn't need one game to be a huge selling point, though. They've got such a large and good library that people won't just say, "I'll buy 360 just for Halo 3!" or some other bs. Games like Mass Effect and Fable II still sold very well, doesn't matter if they were not 'system sellers.' Regardless if people find games like Gears 2 and Halo 3 to be disappointing, that doesn't take away the fact that they are great games worth playing.

          Fatal Error Dec 16, 08
Gears 2 and Halo 3 aren't great; they're popular. The 360's exclusives library isn't exactly massive either (at least, if you're talking about quality games). People flock to the console for the popular games more than for the good games. Everyone gets excited because they hear the whole world is going to be playing Halo 3 and Gears 2 online, so they buy the 360 so they can play those games with their friends. A majority of the bes games out there are multiplatform.

People are bashing Gears because there's so much wrong with it. Glitches everywhere and broken online/multiplayer will do that to you. People still play Halo 3 solely because of its online.

Popular, yet disappointing? Meh...Gears 1 had quite a few glitches. Gears 2 just needs to improve on the match-making system and some minor crap. It's a matter of personal preference. Again, I found Gears 2 to be great...it's campaign destroys the first game's, and Horde mode is addicting.

And sorry, I should mention at the end of my other comment, "...great games worth playing...to me." There's no fact with what game is "great" or not, just our taste. Are the popular games not meant to be great ones because they are...popular? Whatever the case, I don't care what's considered popular (or good) or not, whatever previews and such that interest me will be the deciding factor when picking out a game. I'll enjoy it, that's what matters.

That's a very short-sided and ignorant view of the combat mechanics. Sure it's nothing as fluid as God of War I'll be the first to admit that, but I hardly call the controls "press one button and the game does it for you". You still have to press multiple buttons to get the top quality combos. Your comment about Heavenly Sword makes me question if you actually know and play the game? Cause I who has it and played it multiple times knows the combo system, and I can guarantee you and everyone that ISN'T how it works. You're exaggerating and throwing you're personal opinion about the game as facts.

And I can also guarantee you majority of the users who played HS game has NEVER complained about the combat, which also makes me question your comment about Heavenly. Sword. As I said the most I ever heard is the gameplay length, which I'll agree it was 5 hours, but that's just as close as God of War and even more so has an engaging story. The game itself was brilliantly made in every aspect. And tbh, for what it did, doesn't need to be longer.

If you're going to complain about hack and slash game, Heavenly is definitely not on the top list, and devil may cry, one of my favorites, should DEFINITELY be higher then that game.

Pay $400+ for a console to play a watered-down version of The Sims, or just pay $50 or less to play The Sims. Hmm, that's a tough one.

Home is alright and all for a beta, but it's not something I see myself engaging into often. I agree with Capn Droid, focus on LBP.

Exactly, disabling text is just insanely stupid. I don't mind promoting it, however not everyone can afford a mic right now, especially with money being tight. People would rather save for a new game, than a new mic.

Texting is just fine, you just need the keypad to make it more usable.

The thing I like about Home is that it's optional, therefor it will never be annoying. And even if it's not your thing, you get curious on occasions and you can just hit the XMB -> Home button.

I know I do it every evening just to look around, meet others, chat a bit and play pool/drafts/chess if I have the time. Maybe I'll do it more often and longer when my friendslist is a bit longer.
