Here's a kick in the teeth for anyone who paid for their game console, television or DVD collection with their own money. Karen Matthews, the British mother who was recently imprisoned for kidnapping her daughter to claim the reward money, has received a Playstation 3 for being a "model prisoner"...

Evil mum Karen Matthews has been given a £300 PlayStation in her jail cell as a reward for being a model prisoner.

The benefits scrounger - who arranged for the kidnap of her daughter Shannon to claim reward money - has been categorised as an "enhanced" prisoner because of her behaviour. She also has a DVD player and TV in her cell.

Matthews, 33, is being housed on the "Care and Separation" - segregation - unit of New Hall Prison in Wakefield, West Yorks, where inmates can also watch a large plasma screen TV in the communal area.

Not really a big deal, some prisons allow HDTV's and such if I remember right.

So then whats the point in imprisoning these people??

Isn't the whole point of jail to PUNISH them?? >.>

Hell A ps3 is all I need to keep me from being depressed in jail.

Keeping them away from the public and creating a social isolation with meaningless, repetitive tasks is punishment. There's a fine line between punishment and torture, needs games.

The point of jail is to protect society and give the prisoners rehabilitation, not punish people. Although, they are still considerably strict in prisons.

    Silver Mirror has the jist.

Why can't they be strict and punish people in jail? You committed a crime and you get put in the sin bin. Don't tell me that crap, when our hard earn cash gets taken out in taxes to go towards these people living in jail as a life of luxury then getting taught a lesson. It's absurd. The money could go towards something beneficial like schools(god knows they need it) and other stuff for us. Makes people wonder "Oh wow, I can go to jail and get awesome stuff like this"? And yet this is why we have a over populous of people in jail they keep doing this cause they're getting pampered. This subject pisses me off. Another load of shit.

When people end up getting PS3's HDTV's and the like which is a luxury for some, then yes it is a luxury. People in jail shouldn't be getting these types stuff, neither should our cash in taxes be put towards these people. You're in freaking Jail, you need to get the shit beat out of you if not that, then maybe get some freaking education while they are there instead of pumping iron and the like which doesn't help them.

    Seems a waste, yeah.

I hope if I ever end up in jail, I can have my PS3, 360, HDTV, and earbuds brought in XD.

I'd end up complaining "Warden, my LCD is out of date, can I have a plasma?"

"Of course, you've been a model prisoner"

    "Thank you!"

It's nothing new these days though, is it? As much as I hate the fact that people like her are getting, if anything REWARDED for being a good prisoner, I can't see things changing in the future =/

Wouldn't it be a better incentive to, I don't know, let them use the gym, get outside and do something a bit more productive than sitting in a cell?

It's good to know that if I do something bad and end up in jail, being on my best behavior will get me free stuff =/

Honestly, I may seem a bit of a snob, but I bet prison life is luxury compared to the sink estate she lived in.

I hate it when i hear about these things.

Last time i heard about something like this was with Ian Huntley, the guy behind the Soham murders who was given a goddamn Wii because he wanted to kill himself.

Tbh they should have just handed him the noose =|

Prisons are crap nowadays, they want to help the prisoners not punish them =/

I agree with Bri. I don't particularly like going outdoors, but if I was cooped up in a cell for months, I'd go with the outside time. Though I would take a PS3 if it was offered as well.

Thing is she's hardly been in jail for very long, and they're already giving her pricey rewards.

    But whatever
