Looks like the Xbox 360 won't only be bringing you joy this year in the form of games and movies and the like -- Microsoft's Major Nelson reports the thing can now offer a virtual fireplace, thanks to Xbox LIVE Member SniperED007.

You can see video of Fireplace at XNA.com, and you can add the demo directly to your Xbox 360 download queue*. According to SniperED007, Fireplace will allow you to ‘Enjoy the awesome ambiance of a crackling fireplace in your living room. With realistic smoldering embers and flickering flames it sets the perfect backdrop for a relaxing evening.’ The full version will cost you 400 points.

    ...What the hell?
Actually, I might have some use to this, haha. I'll download the demo and put it up for a party this Saturday just to get reactions.

I might actually buy an Xbox for this now! No not really. It doesn't even give off warmth.

Waste of time and money if you ask me.

It does give off warmth if you stand close enough to the Xbox.

True. But that shows how in efficient the console is. Stupid thing anyway.

The fireplace but not the console.

It's a great feature; if you don't have a fireplace, it's nice to at least have a stand-in for one. I have a DVD that loops a 2-hour-plus video of a fireplace, and it works wonders for ambience.

If only the PS3 had this feature, I could have a fireplace in my room...wait, couldn't I just use the DVD?

What the hell? Two whole hours? I'm sure no-one would notice the difference if it was only a 5 seconds loop.

I assure you, this is not a great feature. The 2 hour dvd of a fireplace loop seems like a better idea, as it would look realistic, this 400 ms point rip off does not look that great at all (just ran it ten minutes ago for my first time on an hd set, it is horrible.... good in theory, but horrible in execution).

Miis in my opinion are better than Avatars. Matter of Fact, the new XBOX Dashboard is dumb. i hate it. it is NOT hardcore.

At least miis show up in Actual games, most being playable.

That's classic Microsoft right there charging for that shit. How lame.

I thought all fan made games were supposed to be free though. I guess not. :\

      It's not a game.

        DragoniteBallZ Dec 23, 08
That makes the fact that it costs something even worse.

It's not Microsoft charging for it, but the creator.

I'm just wondering how/why this even has a demo?! What, does it only give you a 3-second clip of the fireplace, then come up with, "To unlock the full version, press A to go back to Marketplace and give us 400 MS points"? I spotted this while rummaging around XBL yesterday afternoon and immediately shook my head in shame. Haha.

Like I posted on Neoseeker, I went and checked it out earlier this evening. Got the demo, of course, and my family thought it was really cute. We stared at it in awed amusement for a few minutes, then I went back to pimping out my Avatar.

So the amusement and fun of this demo is a few minutes?

I'm surprised it even got Rabid for a few minutes... I may invest a few minutes myself now. If Rabid tried it, can't hurt right?

I showed it to my family too. The "HD fire" amused everyone for a few moments, then it was back to playing Super Street Fighter II HD Remix.

If it got me for any more than a few minutes, I think that would mean I seriously need some new games.

It'll get even more festive when your 360 gets in the Christmas spirit and blends the green color of the system with the red ring of death. Hohoho! Pay us money for a fake fireplace and we'll fry your system!
