A recently study looking at gender differences in more than 2,400 gamers playing EverQuest II has revealed quite a few interesting things regarding gender habits in MMOs. The study showed that females who play MMOs are 5 times more likely to be bisexual, females are more dedicated to the game than males despite their being more male players, and that female MMO players are generally more healthy than the average person (though this was drawn from self-reported levels of exercise).

Go to the sourve for the full article ...

The pressure to conform to traditional gender roles might mean that some women are put off activities seen as "masculine", whereas women who reject traditional gender roles might be more likely to play MMOs such as EverQuest II.

Perhaps in support of this the survey revealed an unusually high level of bisexuality among the women who took part in the study - over five times higher than the general population.

"These are not people who are following strict gender stereotypes," said Prof Caplan.

"I think that the game itself is right now a very non-traditional activity for women, and so I think what you would find in this population are going to be people who are in other ways less traditional than the majority population."

Huh. Good thing people are pouring over data to come up with these Earth-shattering correlations.

What I'd really like to know is who gets in more threesomes, elves or dwarves?

I don't understand the point of this. At all. Why would someone even bother to research this, and even if it wasn't their original goal, why would you pursue it?

Didn't you know, this is the kind of thing that keeps gamers up at night debating till the early hours in the morning. It's the kind of question that can affect the entire community! It's up there with the meaning of life and that kind of thing.

Or maybe it was just a random thing they discovered while they were taking a look at the majority of the other research.

It was just something they noticed. Their original investigation was into gender differences in online gaming, specifically within EverQuest.

Generally these types of studies are ridiculous. 2,400 people playing MMO's don't equate to millions of the MMO players. Sure some might develop bisexual tendencies but it's not 5 times more likely. This is another overblown exaggeration. I agree with this, this study hardly has a point.

Because it's really possible to survey the whole community.

You do know how most studies are performed, right? It's called a random sampling. They obviously can't survey every Everquest II player, so they randomly choose a couple of thousand to represent the community as a whole.

Saying it's an overexaggeration is silly - This is how most studies and surveys are done (though the method of sampling may be slightly different) and these are the results that were found out.

          Just saying.

Plenty of guys using female characters for...various reasons on MMO's. I have one or two myself on Guild Wars, but the biggest reason is because some of the classes armor involve wearing...skirts. xD

Still, there are those who do it for manipulation and such. :S
