According to The Nielsen Company's findings on console usage in households, the PS2 was the most-played console of 2008.
This probably isn't surprising, considering the amount of PS2's that have been sold. But it's interesting to note that the 360 came in as the second most-played console, despite more households owning a Wii ...

According to Nielsen's findings, PS2 accounted for 31.2% of all console usage minutes measured.
Xbox 360 was a distant second with 17.2%, followed by Wii (13.4%), the original Xbox (9.7%), PS3 (7.3%), GameCube (4.6%), and "other" (16.2%).
The fact that more hours were spent playing the original Xbox than PS3 is, well, surprising. PS2's dominance isn't; last we checked, there were 87.6 bazillion of them in the world (give or take a few trillion).

I say this every time like a broken record player every time a Nielsen article pops up, but unlike it's television statistics (which aren't even that accurate themselves), I do not trust these "ratings" from Nielsen at all for gaming consoles. They may be in the ballpark and the PS2 could very well be the most played, but I'm sure there is a large error margin.

Is that even possible? I know Sony still supports the system but that just seems unreal with the next gen consoles already out. I'm calling bullshit.

Right now there are a lot of families who are living paycheck to paycheck and want to give there kids usually under the age of 13 a game system. The PS2 and or Xbox are great systems with TONS of low cost games able to be bought for VERY little money.

Also Third parties are still developing for the PS2.

These ratings feel pretty inaccurate. And I don't really trust any statistics these days. They're usually full of crap anyway.

That's because PS2 still has the most fun games to play followed by the XBOX360. The list looks pretty accurate except for the Wii. I only play the Wii when I have people over who want to play it. I haven't turned that thing on in months. A majority, if not pretty much all of my gaming on the PS3 is PS2 games.

This is true for me, I still play my PS2 often (in fact, playing Smackdown vs. RAW 2008 on my PS2 right now). I have a ton of great sports games for it I still play. I have a feeling in 2009 I'll switch to playing the XBox 360 the most though, but the PS2 will be a console I play for years to come.

Another thing people also forget is PS2 is the last hack/mod-friendly console. The Wii/PS3/XBOX360 consoles aren't very hack friendly and heavily encrypted. That's why even new games people prefer the PS2 version because they can hack it. I have the modded GH3 and GH2 games and those are only available on the PS2.

You all seem to forget that not everyone has the cash to just go out and spend a jack load of money on a PS3 or 360 along with the ridiculous price they ask for the games.

A friend of mine at work is 28, he lives with his girlfriend in a bungalow...I know how much he gets a month as he is a higher rank than me but after he has paid the bills, he hardly has anything left to spend on luxuries...yet he has and plays the PS2 with every hour he has spare when his girlfriend allows him XD

Point is, he has Guitar Hero and the newly released ones, he has the WWE games including the new ones and so on. Sony for once have used their brains and by releasing newly released games for the PS2 as well as the PS3, they keep all fans happy.

On the other hand Microsoft haven't done that...they have left the original Xbox to pretty much be buried and die, however the 360 was able to grab a decent amount of launch titles before PS3 including exclusives and DLC.

Ontop of all that most console owners have both consoles...some may opt for 360 more than PS3 or vice versa...then again there are some people like me and opt for the PC more than the console I own

Wow,if these are correct, it's nice to see that the PS2 is still going strong. And ShadowJ pretty much summed why the reason is. PS2 FTW!!

Make sense considering the fact a PS2 is ridiculously cheap and is still shovelling out new titles.
