The Xbox 360's online features are admittedly the best no matter which way you look at it. However if recent statistics are to be believed only 60% of 360 owners actually have Xbox Live accounts, compared to 85% of the PS3's fanbase having PSN accounts. While you do have to pay a subscription for the privilege on the 360 surely the hardcore crowd which are the majority would want to get the most out of their machine? Apparently not.

That's according to our final stats from Sony's CES conference. Kaz Hirai announced that there are 17 million active accounts on the PlayStation network, with 330 million pieces of content downloaded. Apparently 2.1 million PSN accounts were added in the last month alone.

Microsoft already revealed that its praised Xbox Live service now has 17 million active members. Despite having 28 million consoles in homes* this is the same amount of members online as Sony's PlayStation Network.

But there are less PS3s out there than 360s

That doesn't mean that the PS3 can't have a higher percentage than the 360.

Say there's 20 million 360 owners and only 10 million PS3 owners. Now say 50% of the PS3 owners and 45% the 360 owners take their console online, that doesn't mean the PS3 is owned by more people, just that the percentage is higher on the PS3.

I think you may have missed Takeshi's point. He's saying that even though the percentage is higher for PS3's the fact that there are less PS3's out thre means that, while lower percentage, more people are still online for the 360.

Well if you take MS word for consoles sold the 360 has sold 28 million systems to the ps3s 20 million so if you do the math there are about 16.8 million online for the 360 and 17 million online for the ps3.

The 360 also came out with no networking adapter bulit in like the PS3 did. Which means you move the console and probably more to get close to your router or buy a $100 networking adapter.

Probably the lack of Wi-Fi in the 360 and the horrible price to get an adapter.

btw Xbox Live Silver is free. You don't have to pay just to access Live.

Yeah, that's not a controversial statement at all.

I agree with DystopiaSticker. The high cost of the wireless adapter for the 360 is a turn-off for a lot of people.

But you don't have to use the (pretty damn expensive) official wireless adapter to get the 360 on a wireless connection. You can just use a much cheaper bridge.

People don't realize how cheap it is to get online with the 360 using alternative wi-fi options, its sad.

But not as sad as most people not realizing that the PS3 doesn't ship with HDMI cables and never get the true HD experience that they paid for (just the general public). That is another subject all together though.

Uh, they get the True HD experience they paid for if they get an HDMI cable (around $5).

I've tried cheaper USB Wi-Fi cards with the 360. They didn't work. I just connect directly into my routers.

Like I said, 'the general public'

I also connect my 360 directly in the router... but because for me, wi-fi = lag no matter what system (including my PC and laptop).

Meh, I paid 100 smackers for that wireless adapter...but I barely ever get lag and my router is a quite far away from it.

Some people have the ethernet cable to connect, have the router close-by and yet, they still don't go online. Maybe for Silver they would, but for Gold, I don't know why people believe that $50 for an entire year is a lot...that's less than a game.

Same, I guess it depends on your router. But I'm a sucker for wireless and it was on offer for £35 so I got it.

Or rather, "X-box live (gold) costs money, PSN doesn't"

That is one of the selling points to the PS3, for me.

So yeah, considering the wireless adapter crap, and the PS3 having free online gameplay, it isn't surprising that there is a higher percentage of PS3 users online, as opposed to 360 users.

TBH: Itwould be mostly the lack of (no extra cost) wireless connection onthe 360, since Silver is free, after all.

Unless these statistics specificly refer to the percentage that game online.

It's no wonder why, this isn't an argument about whats cheaper and stuff, it's just news telling us the percantage of online players on PS3 are higher than 360, you can't change that. Unless I don't understand what you are arguing/discussing about.

This goes down to preference. Everything is preference and opinon when it comes to consoles. Who cares!

Eh the only thing I got out of this article was Sony stating 330 million pieces of content downloaded when they accuse M$ and Big N of peddling content.

Not everyone doesn't or wouldn't go online with the 360 because it costs to much.I don't think it costs to much but if I had a 360, I wouldn't go online either.I don't think it costs to much, I just refuse to pay to play online, no matter how cheap it is.

    When I eventually get a 360, I won't be going online.
