I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all consoles are created equal."

Apparently Sony thinks the console wars have gone on long enough and have taken it upon themselves to end the debate once and for all. As such, they've released this nifty chart as a part of a PR stunt (what else would you call it?), mapping out key features on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 Arcade, and Nintendo Wii.

Step aside, fanboys because Sony's PS3 is the clear winner.

Oh God, not this crap again.

How is this going to end the console wars? When fanboys are going at it, it's this crap that the PS3 fanboys use as their defense.

Oh man Sony, this is too good. Too good.

I fail to see the humor...Really. It's the PR team's job to do such things; how is this at all surprising and/or considered funny?

Because there's a difference between skewing views within reasonable measures to sell more products, being arrogant fools and feeling your console is the godsend of forever, and being Sony.

          Fatal Error Jan 10, 09
I don't see the "arrogant fools" part at all and I certainly don't see how Sony's attitude that the PS3 is a "godsend for forever" is in the slightest bit different from Microsoft's or Nintendo's.

Am I really the only one that sees this as everyday practice by all three companies?

It's pretty obvious that other companies are going to compare consoles, putting down others and promoting their own. They'd be stupid if they did otherwise. But it seems that Sony does this on a very escalated level.

Yes, this one particular "incident" (which I may add, is really nothing noteworthy) is definitely reason to say that Sony is acting at an "escalated level". Come on, get real.

hahah, I seen this chart yesterday, it amuses the hell out of me.

Even funnier is the people who defend the chart. Good times.

This is just crazy shit. Boasting, much? And falsely, I might add... How about rumble, Sony?
Oh, and this is not the original source. It's the Gamasutra link in it.

      Koloth Jan 9, 09
Um, in case your unaware, which you clearly seem to be, Sony added rumble well over a year ago when they release the Dual Shock 3 controller. Which is packaged with ALL new consoles.

You really won't be able to put a hard drive on the 360 Arcade anyway. There isn't an open slot for it.

      Sonikkuza Jan 9, 09
Yeah there is, just take off the little grid that covers the Hard Drive slot.

We did. The rest of the world (read fanboys) hasn't.

Man, RCG, I didn't read ALL of your comments above the quoted chart (didn't read the last part), and so I believed they were really aiming to show the features and try to end this console war.

I was thinking, Good for Sony! Finally! Then reading the chart I thought . . . "Hm, this doesn't seem like it's going to end all that garbage of the console wars and everything." A little amused at the thought.

Then I said, "No way this can be done to make each console appear equal!"

Finally I read your last comment and said, "Oh."

Were those statements false or something? I didn't quite understand what was bad about the chart I guess.....did they overexagurate on something?

It's all preference. Good for Sony for making a clear point though. Although I've never used my PS3 or 360 as a movie player and I connect both to my router with ethernet cables. I play PS3 for exclusives and everything else is on my 360.

Like I said on Neo, the chart made me kind of smack myself. Yeah, it's a PR stunt so of course it's gonna show how great the PS3 is. But the chart, like I said, is basically a fanboy's arguments packed into chart form, and it's surprising Sony's PR would just do something so transparent.

Also, comparing a PS3 to the 360 Arcade is like picking on the gimpy kid in the playground. They could've at least used the mid-range model (Pro). This is one of those things consumers look at and might think it makes sense at first until you bring in all the other factors, like different models, games, personal preference, etc. Same thing with how Microsoft advertises the Arcade -- it looks good on paper, but in the end you may be better off spending a little more on a Pro.

This is good and all sony, but that initial price is what lures people in! I work at sam's club and I always get asked "do you have the $199 Xbox 360?" I tell them "No, ours is $298." And they get turned away from that extra $100 even though the $298 has a 60gb harddrive and a couple of games(during the holiday season)...Simple consumers don't care about the long run, just their wallets at-the-moment and until Sony realizes this and does something about it, they are always going to sell less than the 360 and Wii.

Sony should add a "does not apply in Australia" to the bottom of their chart. We're still paying $800 for the PS3 while the Wii and 360 are hovering around the $300 mark.

Eh, I don't think it really matters about which model they pick. They should change it to $20 - $150 though for the Hard Drive since you can order one from M$ for $20 applicable for arcade model owners wanting to upgrade. The wireless adapter for 360 is over priced though. Still not a requirement and I don't have a need for one. I don't see anything unfair by them publishing this though. There's nothing factually incorrect (save the new hard drive offer and sizes available.)

It's funny, cause Sony is comparing an 80GB PS3 to an ARCADE 360. Who the *bleep* do you think will win? Even if it was 40GB it'd still win. Man this is stupid.
    • 1
      Koloth Jan 10, 09
You prefer they compare it to the Elite? Because price wise the PS3 is still going to win based on those comparative features. Of course the Wii still trumps them both in the price catagory. But Sony is trying to say you get more for your money with the PS3. And using this chart it is going to hold true for any version of the PS3 and any version of the 360.

Of course that's not taking into account that you might not want Wifi or the big HDD. Maybe you want the $20 HDD kit that MS has, or no HDD at all. Maybe you want a wired connection. And maybe you don't want XBL gold. On the other hand maybe the 360 isn't the console for you after all.

Buy an Arcade. Purchase the Microsoft deal that comes with 3 months of live and a 20GB harddrive for 30 bucks (For arcades and cores only). Then use an ethernet cable to connect your 360 to your computer and bridge your connections/ICS.

    Price: $230

I don't really care since I own both systems, but god, do they really have to go to the extremes to jack up the price?

      Koloth Jan 11, 09
That's not the point of the chart though. The point is to make the systems roughly equal. So they need to compare it with the larger harddive. And you have to buy the wifi dongle thingy. Sure there are cheats and work arounds. But not everyone can or will use them.

I mean hell I don't even pay for gold on my 360 because I don't use it. I don't need wifi because it is less than 6 feet from the router. But I did get the 120GB HDD because at the time it wasn't significantly more expensive than the 60GB. Got it for $120 used. Still I realize if I bought every add-on and extra required to make the system completely equal to my PS3 I would be paying almost double what I paid for the PS3. Or at least I would have at the time that I bought it.

But I don't need the 360 to be equal to the PS3. The PS3 is a major part of my entertainment center. It is my DVD player, Blu-ray player, a game system, sometimes a music system, occasionally a back up computer when someone is using mine or the rare occasion that it crashes, I use it for all of that and more. Some days it doesn't get shut down at all. The 360 on the other hand is just another gaming system. At least that's the way I look at them. Still I enjoy both for what they are. And others might use their 360 similar to how I use my PS3. I just prefer the PS3 for things outside of gaming over the 360.
