According to a report, Lara Croft's latest outing, Tomb Raider Underworld, sold at least 500,000 less copies than projected pre-Christmas. And the publisher, Eidos, fell £20million (approx. $30.5million) short of its projected overall profit. While Lara's new game did alright in Europe, being a top 10 game in the franchise's origin country, the UK, sales across the Pond weren't so profitable.

Publisher EIDOS yesterday revealed that gamers snapped up 1.5million units before Christmas.

But it is thought to have been aiming for at least half a million more.

That's a shame, the game isn't too bad.

Lara is going to have to rebuild her reputation first. She has had a few to many bad games inbetween. A lot of people that were fans of 1-3 are going to have a hard time trusting her again.

Like me. Back in the day, I never really got into the later games. Chronicles and the Last Revelation didn't really seem to be what I was looking for. Even 3 wasn't as good as the first 2. And don't even start with AoD. I was planning on getting it till I heard about the mediocre scores from users. Apart from the remake, I haven't bought a TR game since the third itteration. ANd I don't plan on buying another...unless they remake TR2.

"She has had a few to many bad games inbetween. A lot of people that were fans of 1-3 are going to have a hard time trusting her again."
4 was okay, Chronicles was half-assed and AoD was bad. but they ditched Core and gave the game to Crystal Dynamics since then, and we had Legend and Anniversary which were both awesome.

I just got Underworld yesterday, it's good. I did expect a bit more though.

Saying 4 was ok doesn't mean much. The fact of the matter is that since 3 most of the older fans have lost any interest in the series. And they are going to have to convince people that the old Lara is back before they are going to do gangbuster sales like that.

Most people will probably either wait until all their friends are telling them to get it or the price drops. I literally haven't picked up a Tomb Raider game since 3. I just lost interest after 3. Then you start hearing how bad they are and you ignore them. Now that people are saying they are good again I'm starting to listen. But it is going to take more than that to convince me.

yeah okay, Koloth I understand you might have your opinion but did you know Legend was too on the top chart in UK when it was released: http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/headlines2709.html
          and
          quote
In the twelve weeks from release to 30 June 2006 Legend has sold over 2.9 million units on all formats exceeding its budget expectations.
          http://www.tombraiderchronicles.com/headlines2785.html

and the fact is that the series has redeemed itself after it was given to Crystal Dynamics. Edit:besides.. FF games weren't that good since the eighth one, and X-2 was awful, yet you still do buy them?

2.9 million in 12 weeks is not particularly good in this business. Nor does it mean the next game will sell through 2 million in a month. Even in the best of times. But in the worst of times people are going to be even more cautious not to by a potentially bad game.

Look you can defend the game all you want I don't give a crap. Fine its good I never said it wasn't. I said before Lara will sell 2 million units a month again she will have to prove herself. And having one previous "good" game after 3 bad ones isn't going to cut it. She has to rebuild her fanbase and her reputation. She hasn't done that, yet. It's not that difficult a concept.

Legend sales were good, if not very good. ha, and it was the very first game after AoD. Anniversary was actually an updated remake of the first one (aimed at "old fans"..), and it was a very quality game. I'm pretty sure it sold well too.

what? I'm not defending it. I simply don't quite see how you can say they have to redeem themselves further when it's been ages since those games you're talking about and they did release two new good titles, and an awesome remake of the old school TR? besides you do play Uncharted, don't you, and I wouldn't call that one a revolutionary game or anything like that..

          Koloth Jan 12, 09
Good and revolutionary are two completely different things. Uncharted is a new game but it garnered a good reputation fairly quickly. Tomb Raider as a whole has a very tarnished reputation and 2 games isn't going to turn to around as fast as you want to think.

And again 3 million sales isn't "very good" for a multiplatform title. They have to redeem themselves further because this is only the second game they have released since the bad ones.

Seriously man what's not to get? One game does not prove anything. Many claim Halo 3 was the worst Halo made, yet it sold because of the reputation of the first one. It's different for a new game or a game known to have a bad run. Not everyone reads reviews or sales figures either. Most people go by word of mouth. And for a long time the word of mouth for Tomb Raider was "just don't". Now the games have gotten better but the word of mouth hasn't gotten around yet. Not everyone knows that it is safe to go back to the series.

Uncharted is basically TR with more shooting, it is just a quality game with nothing new. so you're basically saying you were pissed so much at Core and them milking TR back then that you've chosen to ignore any attempts by a different developer?

no, for the Tomb Raider it's pretty good. this game will never sell better than that unless they do something with it like Capcom did with RE4.

what? no I do know people were skeptical about the series since then, I meant I don't understand you (and similar guys), Koloth. Lol. you do play FF games albeit they went downhill since 8, and X-2 was awful. you do play Uncharted , which is basically a TR clone with more shooting like I said, yet..

          You are so clueless.

As a matter of fact I hate FF12. FF8 is my favorite of the franchise. Uncharted had a good story and a cinematic feel. It doesn't matter that it copies some elements of TR it is what it does right that makes it worth playing.

And yes, people will hold it against a new team because the old team milked the franchise almost to death. The same holds true for Final Fantasy. They have a different team on almost every game. People don't care about that. They care about the game and the franchise as a whole.

what am I clueless about, Uncharted?

and I actually do remember you guys saying FF12 sucked. and that's basically two FF games (one after another) that you did hate, right? not to mention the series overall went downhill since 8 (fine, for some people, since 10). let me ask you something, are you going to buy FF13? Uncharted is overall a worse game than say, Legend really, I never said it is a bad one, and I never said you couldn't enjoy it. that doesn't take away the fact that it's nothing new and basically nothing but great visuals. and it's still TR in it's core, with more action.

who are you talking about, Koloth, casual players? you guys do know TR changed developer. okay, I would actually simply agree to disagree here but it's just that the way I see it you 've simply ignored all the recent titles due to the series being milked 10 years ago. I find such logic odd, because you might miss on good titles since you still think of what was this series a generation back.

Wow, look at you guys go, haha.

Koloth; If I were you, I'd go out and atleast rent Legend or Underworld. Preferrably Legend since Underworld might confuse you at times if you haven't played Legend.

I was like you though; Played the early games and loved them, but just about COMPLETELY lost interest in the series afterwards because of all the crap we were given.

I heard good things about Legend from a friend and after buying it cheap online, I couldn't be more pleased with the direction of the series. It's finally starting to get things right again. Not flawless by any means, but much better than the crap we had for years.

Legend had a little too much shooting/fighting for my taste and not enough platforming, but Underworld is almost the exact opposite.

Yeah, Underworld is actually a pretty damn good game. I didn't buy it, but I rented the game through gamefly. It has really larg levels (2-3 hours long on first playthrough for some) and the fights are fun. Headshots are a blast and I like that the story picks up from right after Legend and has many connections.

The last two games have given quality back to the series after I thought the series fell apart a bit after the first few games.

I'll tell you back when I had the PSone I was a HUGE,MAJOR, and UNBELEIVABLY BIASED towards Tomb Raider. It was my fave game in that time. Then I bought AoD...... ;; (and I beat that game to, might I add) Boy that game was......awefull, just plain....wrong. It made me (as a tomb raider fan) feel dirty

I played and beat Legends and was greatly impressed, I actually wished it was longer!! It was what made me love Tomb Raider again.

I haven't played Anniversary or Underworld (I'm broke) but given the chance I would buy Underworld, especially since it had nice reviews.

Core giving the series up to Crystal Dynamics was the best thing to happen with the series. I hope they can keep this up.
