Who knows why, but Microsoft is considering adding on a Blu-ray drive to the Xbox 360, and that would certainly be an upset in the console war. Is Microsoft really gonna give up on HD-DVD? But then again, that's only IF Blu-ray becomes a clear leader in disc formats.

Community site Xbox Circle has reported that during a recent interview with ITMedia, Microsoft boss Peter Moore stated that the Xbox 360 could see an add-on Blu-ray drive launched for it.

The high-definition format, already built in to the PlayStation 3, would launch for Microsoft's system if, according to Moore, it becomes the clear winner in the current DVD war.

While HD-DVD is Microsoft's preferred DVD format, Moore points out that as Xbox 360 uses an external DVD drive it allows them to adapt to whatever standard wins out.

Moore also went on to say that Microsoft would never ship future iterations of their console with a built-in drive, believing that such a move limits the gamer's choices.

It's been known by most gamers for a long time that MS would simply release a Blu-ray drive if HD-DVD fails. No doubt someone at MS already made this comment when their HD-DVD was announced. Its just sound business practice

Good tactics really, they're pretty much in a win-win situation here. I bet they'll release a Blue-ray drive in the future anyway even if it isn't the clear winner, as long as it is doing well.

Wouldn't this make Microsoft's console just as affordable as the PlayStation 3 is? Personally I think they are going to wait a year or two. Blue-ray drives still cost a fortune.

Well I'm pretty sure that the 360 is quite overpriced, especially the premium version, and I don't think they could release a 200$ Blu-Ray drive with all the fixins at 200 dollars to match the PS3's 600.

Yes, they do cost a lot, but that is what makes PS3 a good deal. This was bound to happen, Blu-Ray is the future.

This is all irrelevant at this point in time. People are just getting their DVD collections just right and the average consumer isn't going to replace his entire collection with an HD counterpart as of yet.

It doesn't matter which format MS decides to use. People are still buying 360's to play games. The whole Media Center connectivity idea that MS fathomed fell through. The majority of gamers just want to play next gen games in HD. Replace their DVD's with an entirely new format and new HD drive? Not yet. DVD isn't that old.

What a bunch of cheating losers. Trying to take our stuff. Unfortunately for xbox, they dont have the thing that will really win the console war. And it will not be blue-ray disc's, its the Cell. And you know what, there copy cats. No originality, no wonder there xbox elite sucks so bad.

I agree with teodortenchev about the price similarity if this were to happen. I'd rather it never had it though, I prefer DVD.

Blu-ray is just over-the-top technology. HD DVD is good enough, you don't need 50GB+ of space.
