Looks like id software is really going all out with Doom 4 -- the team has signed on British fantasy award winning author Graham Joyce to help with the story. The project is top secret at the moment, and all Joyce would say was, "I can say that ID have hired me to help develop the storyline potential."

CVG learns that British Fantasy award winning author Graham Joyce is penning id's new Doom.

Cast your minds back to May 2007 when id Software announced it was working on another entry in the Doom series. Not a lot was said apart from, "Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next instalment of our flagship franchise to Earth."

As true as that may be, the project's been completely under wraps for the best part of a year and a half. Nothing is known about where the series will go next, though it's presumed that Doom 4 will continue where Doom 3 left off (in space and hell, in case you forgot).

I hope this elevates the story. Doom 3 hooked me in the opening moments leading up to all hell literally breaking lose, and after those exciting opening moments, I felt the story went stale.

Yeah? I was hooked through most of it. I think one of the big challenges for most devs is creating a balance between play length and story -- I imagine it's hard to not artificially lengthen the game, as otherwise it ends up being like, say, Mirror's Edge and people complain. Personally I'd take something like ME over a contrived plot, but that's me..

I love it when a game company realizes what a good writer can do for a game.

Oh c'mon... I really liked the story of the first ones so no it's going to be less original. Well as long as it will be better than the Doom 3 story (i don't think speaking characters has done well with the game) i don't mind.
