Smarthouse has made the argument that the PS3 is killing Sony both moneywise and in consumers perception of the brand name itself. They title the article insinuating that Sony needs to drop the PS3 and bring out the PS4, however upon further reading they state "One also has to wonder whether they have the resources necessary to produce the Playstation 4 or even the people that are smart enough to actually deliver a breakthrough product"

...Sony's pricing strategy is set to bite them on the backside unless Sony can deliver a stunning PS4 that is as much a gaming console as it is a home content gateway and player.

For a long time Sony has been telling consumers that the big difference between the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360 is the inclusion of a Blu ray player however this does not wash anymore.

Now Blu ray players are down to $200 and the PS3 is looking very tired, expensive and noisy.

When the PS3 was launched Sony deliberately designed it so that it was not backward compatible. Instead the Company tried to get two bytes of the cherry by continuing to sell the PS2 as a low cost console and the PS3 as a premium console thus forcing die hard gamers to buy a new Sony PS3 console and new PS3 compatible games.

Combined the two consoles have sold close to 265 million units worldwide however the Sony gaming division is are still bleeding big money. Last week Sony announced that it will make over $3.8 billion dollars in losses with a big chunk of those losses being made by the gaming division.

Yes they do don't they I guess some people just can't live without it though. It's like their calling in life. Or their oxygen.

Feel sorry for them. The urge to do it is like a drug. We need to help them!!

Funny how people need to get site traffic by making shitty, misinformed articles. Give it a rest. Please.

No. When the PS3 was launched by Sony, it had BC.

I don't think Smarthouse needs site traffic. In Australia, the PS3 did not launch with the full backwards compatibility like US and Japan got (I believe it didn't even play all PS1 games either).

But the use of the word "Deliberately" means on purpose (which is true, they didn't accidentally do it) but implies that they went out of their way to do it, as if in spite.

However, that isn't the case. They didn't Go out of their way to take it out. They simply didn't add it into the PS3 units anymore. If anything, they "deliberately" added it in the first place by going out of their way to have the EE.

It actually seems they did go out of their way to take it out in Australia (to cut costs of the system), where as in America and Japan, they kept the BC in for quite a bit longer (all the way up until the release of that MGS4 80gb bundle that still featured BC).

Not really. I go out of my way to put sprinkles on my ice cream (adding something to it). But I don't go out of my way to NOT add sprinkles to my ice cream (not adding something to it) (to cut down on time).

lol, interesting way to look at it. But they still took something out of it that was initially in the system. The first version of the PS3 included backwards compatibility as part of standard no matter if you got the 20gb or 60gb (going with ice cream, it was at first like Neapolitan flavored ice cream).

When Sony Australia got a hold of that Neapolitan, they decided to cut costs, they would remove the strawberry portion of the ice cream, thinking that Australians only need chocolate and vanilla anyways.

They may not have needed to add BC to make the PS3, but they certainly didn't need Blu-Ray (vanilla) either (which I still haven't seen a reason for yet).. either way though, they did have both features at launch, so that is just how the system came. I'm hungry.

Y'know, sometimes I just want to sell my PS3 purely because of the fact that the press absolutely despises it. I hate coming onto GG.com everyday to find 5 more articles telling us the PS3 fails.

Meh, the media always make stuff up. Piers Moron, sorry Morgan, is a prime example.

Preferably not, I already tossed out enough cash as it is to get a PS3 for Christmas, I don't want it to become obsolete any time soon. I will say though, if and when they make a PS4, PLEASE let it have complete backwards compatibility.

What a crock of manure. The PS3 has yet to hit its stride and this idiot is looking for a PS4? How many people have the capacity to take advantage of 1080p, 7.1 surround sound (despite most movies and games are 5.1)? I mean for crying out loud! Most people are not ready for a PS3 let alone a PS4! The PS3 is still way ahead of its time. True Sony is having problems but things are tough. Microsoft laying off 5,000 people, and layoffs all over the world. The gamble on the future didn't pay off. High Definition didn't catch on as expected.

The PS4 is NO WAY coming soon. It's just been released. What improvements can be made besides the price?
