Demon's Soul, the PS3 exclusive hack and slasher by the people at FROM Software has received not just one but two of its very first reviews from Japan. Famitsu has given the game 9, 7, 7, 6, equaling 29/40, and Dengeki awarded it a more positive 95, 85, 85, 85, adding up to 350/400. Details on why it was given these scores is still scarce.

Famitsu and Dengeki, two of Japan's top gaming publications, have published their reviews of the upcoming Sony exclusive, Demon's Souls. The former gave it a mixed review, scoring it a 9, 7, 7, and a 6 for a pretty average 29/40. This score is remarkably similar to that of White Knight Chronicles, which was branded with an equally average 28/40. White Knight would go on to become the best selling HD JRPG to date, despite it's lackluster critical reception.

It's not a bad review, its 4 reviews and they're mixed. One guy loved it, 2 thought it was ok, and another thought it meh.

Also, the other magazine as also from 4 reviewers, but ALL of them pretty much agreed that it was a good game. I don't even give Famitsu the time of day anymore, but these other guys I never heard of, so maybe their word is more vaild.

Famitsu is traditionally very tough with reviews, as is my understanding.

Ironic that we're getting reviews when the game has no coverage or footage in North America...

Didn't do any better than WKC in Famitsu. Either Famitsu is a shitty reviewer, or the PS3 can't get a decent RPG to save its life.

I tend to believe bad reviewer. Famitsu has lavished praise on Mediocre RPGs in the past(I'm looking at you Infinite Undiscovery) and torn down games like White Knight Chronicles. From what I have seen of WKC, and played with Infinite Undiscovery, neither are genre altering, but WKC looks better, and was better received by the gamers. Yet the rating was horrible compared to IU. Maybe being an XBOX exclusive automatically adds points(similar to a golf handicap)?

IMHO: Famitsu has always been about "traditional Japanese gameplay" - things that don't break the mold too much get praise, while games that take bold steps to advance the JRPG genre seem to get slammed. Maybe I am making that assumption based on personal bias (i agree with you they've lavished praise on mediocre rpgs and torn down others -your examples are fantastic) but others are starting to agree with me.

I like how WKC has a 'lackluster reception' when the only review we've really seen was from Famitsu...

When was the last time a reviewer was completely right? They gave GTA IV a 99%. It didn't deserve that. This game looks to be good, and Famitsu better get on board with the way games are these days or perish. Or not.
