More info to stir the simmering pot which is gaming politics. Recently EA CEO John Riccitiello announced that Mass Effect 2 would be multiplatform, but did not specify whether this meant merely the PC version or a PS3 port. When questioned a UK rep stated they do not have any more details at this time on what exactly this comment meant, meaning either one of two things. Either EA is unsure themselves, or they're trying to garner some attention using the rumor.

EA has refused to specify what company CEO John Riccitiello meant when he said that Mass Effect 2 was a “multi-format” title on Tuesday, yet again skirting heavy rumour that the sequel is heading to PS3.
“As John Riccitiello said on our earnings call this week, the game will come to multiple platforms, but we do not have any more details for you at this time,” a senior UK rep told VG247 today.

If they really wanted attention, wouldn't the best viable option be to say... "Mass Effect 2 will be on the PS3"?

Like I said before, Mass Effect 1-year prior to release: no PC version announced, so it was called an exclusive. Mass Effect 2 1 year prior to release: common knowledge there will be a PC version, so it's called multiplatform.

Though not specifying is just soooo pointless. If it's true: why hide it? Who does it hurt? If it's false: PS3 owners couldn't buy the game for their console anyway, so EA isn't gaining/losing anyone by teasing them.

PC releases generally aren't counted in console exclusivity. The PC is considered a foriegn object so releases generally don't affect console releases much. Remember how big a deal they made out of Morrowind and Oblivion exclusivity? Yet I bought both of them for the PC. But they weren't on any other console.

Wanting to know which systems isn't a silly question. For all we know multiplatform could mean 360 and DS.

But what did Bethesda themselves call Oblivion and Morrowind? Did they say they were releasing Xbox exclusives?

I don't know, you would have to ask ShadowJ that. He is more knowledgable with Bethsoft history than I am.

I doubt that its going to the PS3, and will continue to doubt unless they say Mass Effect 1 is releasing on the PS3.

Agreed, you can't have missed the plot of the first one and start it up fluently.

Also, there's no basis on what your character would be. All the decisions you make in the first one are supposed to carry over. If they make 2 on PS3 how do they handle that?

I reckon they'll do it like KoTOR.

Someone'll say "Did you hear about the evil Commander Shepard who did X, Y, and Z?"
And you get to reply "oh yeah, he was a real bad egg ", or "nah, I heard he was actual sound as *bleep*."

Yeah, I was thinking that too. That would cover the good and evil aspect pretty well.

I just think there are more intricacies in the story that would be missing. Since I doubt that anyone made it through the story as perfectly good or evil. Even if they were good/evil the probably made a few contradictory choices which may turn out to be important in the sequel.

Multiplatform means for more then a single system. Geez I don't blame EA for not answering the question. They have better things to do then answer silly questions.

Bioware obviously aren't wanting to commit to anything.

I don't really care, it'll be on a console I can play it on, so I'm happy.

Mass Effect was friggin' huge with high-end graphics and cinematics. I would expect Mass Effect 2 to have the same. It would probably need to have a massive downgrade in both for the Wii to run it. I'm sure with the current specs to PS3 wouldn't have any trouble.

I still say they're talking about the PC when they mean multi-platform, though.

      1. Mass Effect 1 was published by Microsoft Game Studios. That pretty much screams "exclusive" right there.
      2. No other Bioware game has ever been produced for anything except the PC and/or Xbox. (Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR, Jade Empire, etc.)

About point number 2, that was before EA purchased BioWare. EA sees a huge hit in Mass Effect and holding it to one console is probably something they really really don't want.

They're probably making a shitty Wii port as we speak haha.

There's the rare case of a PS2/Dreamcast and Nintendo DS game.

Though this move doesn't make sense. Konami had to come out and debunk every single time a "MGS4 on 360" rumor popped up (and we know how many shitstorms it made), this is basically just ASKING for speculation and a rumor fest...unless that's what they were aiming for.

In any case, bring on Mass Effect 2 already.

That's probably exactly their intention. Keep people talking. I mean hell I hardly see any discussion of FF13 anymore. People found out o=about the multiplatform deal. They had their week long hissy fit and then it was business as usual once everyone calmed the F down. No one brings it up as PS3s heavy hitter, no one gloats about it. It has just kind of fallen off the radar beyond the typical interest from the fans.

However if Bioware keeps hinting at something more then people keep talking about it. And even if none of the speculation comes true we can't be to upset because it was never confirmed. Konami had to keep fighting off the 360 rumors because wishful fans kept bringing it up. Bioware doesn't have to fend off anything because they haven't confirmed or denied anything.
