It's been almost a year since the claims that Resident Evil 5 is racist died down. Fans everywhere breathed a sigh of relief when the issue was finally forgotten about.
But with the recent release of the demo, it seems there are a few game-sites that aren't too happy with the racist themes and imagery that appear in the game.
And so, once again, the racism debate rears it's ugly head.

Resident Evil 5 forum

Just when Capcom thought it might be able to release Resident Evil 5 without seeing this debate rear its ugly head yet again, Eurogamer has published a preview of the game that makes some pretty alarming claims about the game's arguably racist imagery.
Writing that "there's imagery in here that goes beyond the general air of foreign menace that caused a ruckus in the first trailers,"

Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead goes on to describe a scene where protagonist Chris Redfield comes cross a gang of men beating something in a sack. These men are not the "infected Majini," they are "ordinary Africans, who stop and stare at you menacingly as you approach...where Africans are concerned, the game seems to be suggesting, bloodthirsty savgery just comes with the territory."

Whitehead goes on to describe a moment later in the game where a white blonde woman is violently dragged off by black men, a scene he says is completely irrelevant to the plot, that plays "so blatantly into old cliches of the dangerous 'dark continent'...you'd swear the game was written in the 1920s."

Later on, Whitehead says, there are even more "outrageous and outdated images." He also remarks that the image of Sheva, Redfield's partner in the game and a light-skinned, English-speaking African, fits into accepted Hollywood standards for black heroines, and "compounds the problem rather than easing it."

Video Games are not here to fix any of societies problems or adjust to avoid stereotypes. Don't like what you see? Then don't play the game.

This generation allows for more realism and depiction when detailing specific cultures or sects within a gaming title. People need to get a grip and get over it, because I can assure you, there will be far more accurate depictions in the future, as the technology within our consoles changes.

Sick of Video gaming being accountable for everyones issues...

Eurogamer can honestly take their preview and *bleep* off, racism in a video game whatever next? Just because Capcom have actually tried to add a realistic slant to the game, it doesn't matter if they are black, white, asian or hispanic this shit happens. I don't see why it is causing so much outrage i mean Capcom already added in some white and asian manjini to ease on the racism claims Eurogamer to me missed the bandwagon by a whole year as no one cares anymore.

I'm starting to actually think about this, though.

I think this is the first time an RE game is actually depicting something in an extremely serious manner, even reflecting aspects of real life to an extent. It may trouble some to know how the game could impact how people (especially impressionable people) perceive Africa and Africans.

At first it seemed annoying that the issue kept coming up, but if writers are continually disturbed or troubled with the game in some way...I'm starting to think it's hitting a sore spot.

This would be different it were just a couple of no-name blogs fuelling for hits, but it seems like a lot of different writers from different places are sort of expressing similar sentiments on the subject matter.

But whatever, I'm sure most gamers won't care.

This whole issue can be summed up pretty easily.

It's not racist and anyone who thinks it is should not be allowed to walk the streets unsupervised.

*yawn* what? Is someone complaining about something stereotypical, or just riding the racial train to get publicity?

Actually it was just me expressing how pathetic this argument is. I'm so sick of people claiming racial discrimination. This isn't the 1800s anymore. There are strict laws about it and if there's something in the media conflicting with those laws then they will be delt with. If not, then there's really nothing to complain about. You'd may as well falsley scream "Rape" or "Police brutality". There's really no difference.

Oh, and VampireZombie? Go complain to someone who cares.

The scene where a group of black zombies drag off a white woman seems a little odd considering the controversy, but come the *bleep* on: ONE scene? ONE scene that's only there to depict the brutality of the infected and all of a sudden Capcom are supposedly saying that Africans want to rape you? Who the *bleep* is so stupid as to believe that's what they're subversively trying to say?
    quote
Chris Redfield comes cross a gang of men beating something in a sack. These men are not the "infected Majini," they are ordinary Africans, who stop and stare at you menacingly as you approach
And I'm pretty sure they're beating one of the infected in that sack and I'm pretty sure if you were in a village where zombies were trying to bite your face off, you would be cautious of anyone too. Wouldn't you look menacingly at someone you don't know in that situation because there's a good chance they want to kill you?

The simple fact is this is just being overplayed by both sensitive people and sites looking for traffic, only focussing on the parts where things can be twisted to look remotely racist. If there's an outbreak in Africa then who would become infected? Africans. Same way that when there was one in Raccoon city is was the people of Raccoon city who were infected.

And who is the most evil of all evils in Resident Evil? Wesker and Spencer. And guess what? ... They're both white! OMG CAPCOM MUST H8 WHITE PPL!!!

After playing the demo, I can't really see where Eurogamer is coming from. Yes, the first RE5 trailer was a bit misleading because it showed Chris slaughtering a bunch of black guys who barely looked zombified. Anyone who was unfamiliar with the series might have wondered what the hell that was all about. But now that the demo has been released, there is hardly anything to kick up a stink about. There are an awful lot of white and Asian zombies in the game too. Which is pretty stupid, imo. I can't help but feel as though Capcom added them in an attempt to stop the controversy. But it's a little hard to feel like I'm in North Africa when a bunch of white or Asian zombies start attacking me. It's like "wtf? What are you doing here?"

Anyway, I think that alot of the critics are mistaking Capcom's view of black people with Capcom's view of Africa. There have been plenty of good black characters in RE who are portrayed like any other RE character, same goes for other Capcom franchises. As far as any of us know, Capcom have nothing against black people. Sure, the imagery in RE5 might be a little questionable, but the unfortunate truth is that there are many people in Africa who live like that. It's a Third World country, so of course we're going to see people hunting, scavenging, attacking enemies, and "glaring menacingly" at anything that is foreign or unfamiliar. These peoples' lives revolve around survival.

Now I haven't played the demo yet, neither have I really been following the game, but I can still sort of see where Eurogamer is coming from.

Now I don't believe that Resident Evil 5 is racist, but you'd think that Capcom would want to be a bit more discreet when depicting things such as

    quote
Eurogamer's Dan Whitehead goes on to describe a scene where protagonist Chris Redfield comes cross a gang of men beating something in a sack.
    quote
Whitehead goes on to describe a moment later in the game where a white blonde woman is violently dragged off by black men.
since things like that actually happen in Africa, alongside the mass genocide and political corruption.

Since neither of those events seem crucial to the plot, you can't tell me that Capcom didn't now just exactly what would happen when they included these in the game.

I can't help but think the blonde girl who is dragged away and killed is crucial to the plot somehow. She's appeared in many trailers, screens and news items.
It'd just be asshole-ish of Capcom to create that scene and character just for the sake of being killed by a bunch of black guys.

Who the hell cares about this racism crap? It's clearly not been meant to offend anyone, but there's always gonna be someone out there willing to pull out the racism card to get their own way. Sucks =/

I wondering if things were the other way around, and I mean totally turned on thier head so the Zombies were all white and the two main characters were black, would this also be considered racist, would there be such a stink kicked up like there has been, or would it be completely ignored and accepted.

Or would people take another entirely stupid stance and say that the white people are trying their best to ethnically cleanse their village by killing the black invaders.

Took what I was gonna say out of my mind. Alot of the time in these race rows, it's white people complaining about things that they percieve as racist. Political Correctness sucks.

People would likely still find the game racist. They would say that the game portrays black people as savages.

When you kill a white man in a video game, it's considered video game violence, but when you kill a black man in a video game, it's considered video game racism? *bleep* that bullshit.
