Sony announces 21 million PS3's sold!

During their speech outlining their plan to bring the Playstation brand to Latin America Sony have claimed they have sold 21.3 million PS3's worldwide to date, which is definitely no small number no matter which way you put it. Considering the price and lack of games up until recently this is quite a success.

    This was announced in their Q3 financial report. Quite old, actually. Although I'm pretty sure it is a shipped number, though.

    21 million sold...nice but how many of them have been traded in for a 360?

    I know for a fact my friend that was an idiot bought 3, sold them off and bought 1 more for himself and I'm pretty much deciding whether it is worth still keeping my PS3 since it is never used except for Blu-ray and I can grab a Blu-ray drive for my PC for way cheaper.

    Kudos to Sony though, they are becoming the new Microsoft, thinking all about the money and not their fans

      You know, I didn't honestly think you were one of those people that shot their mouth off too often. Once or twice...that was fine...now it just seems that you completely missed the Fanboyism era and are trying to make up for it.

    How many traded their PS3s? Well, how many traded their 360s? Works both ways really.

    Sony has to be confident; meekness is not a virtue in the console-making market. Besides 21M is impressive, only 5M behind the 360, and with so many blockbusters releasing for PS3 this year, I've no doubt it will catch up (see: GOW3)

    The real question is how many 360 owners bought another 360 before Microsoft acknowledged their reliability issues? Posting negative comments only makes one look like their 12(How old are you ShadowJ). Using the I have a friend story doesn't give a lot of credence to the argument either. Either way, you sound like someone suffering from endowment complex(I bought a 360 so it has to be the best). I own both and I hope both are successful enough to stay in the video game business. They produce the games I like to play, and keep each other honest. BTW, I believe more people probably traded in their system for a Wii than a 360. Everyone on these boards has blinders on to the true champ of this gen, and it is not a close race.

      Depends on what race you're looking at, the greedy cash-in race or the quality-of-product x value-for-money race, and believe me around here the latter is much more important. It's not a case of having blinders on to Nintendo, it's a case of recognising ability over public ranking; quality of products over how much profit a company gets.

    Posting negative comments works just the same as posting positive comments and I won't stop posting them just because someone doesn't like what I have to say.

    I speak my mind whether it is harsh, negative or down right isn't needed. Only time I will stop is when authority tells me too.

    You see, you tend to forget that comments have two stages, you have normal comments where someone will put forth their opinion and back it up with a reason or evidence. Then you have fanboy/moronic comments, these are what everyone sees around the internet and isnatntly judges every negative comment to be. These comments are easy to spot however as they state either they like or dislike something and leave it at that.

    Also you see you have assumed. I don't own a 360, in fact ironically enough I own a PS3 and only use it to play Unreal Tournament III and Blu-ray DVDs.

    I can buy a Blu-ray drive for PC for £60 and UT3 along with the rest of the Unreal series for PC for £22.

    I have many other games for PS3 but I hardly play them these days and the only exclusive worth looking at for myself is God of War III.

    Lastly I have more friends that own and play 360 than I do PS3 wise, not only that but in my experience the playstation network hasn't been good to me for online gameplay, only UT3 has worked online so far.

    So Brett, if you were in my shoes, with not enough room/plug sockets/ports in your TV for both...which one would you choose? Oh and while being curious, how old are you? Just asking since you asked me

    So brett was a little off. In fact I'm shocked J is even considering getting a 360 from the comments I've seen him make.

      Ironically, he is always complaining about how many mistakes Sony makes. So really, he doesn't really like much of anything in the gaming world.

        lol Red 9, I just don't understand what Sony are up too and my main annoyance with them is how they are treating Bethesda Softworks and blaming most things concerning the PS3 and their games on them..but that's another story.

        Although I have always pointed out the mistakes of Sony AND Microsoft AND Nintendo, though Nintendo are pretty cool now, they don't care for rivalry of how many fanboys they have. You also seem to think that because I have negative thoughts about the games YOU like, that I dislike everything or sorry "most of" within the games industry.

        Overall I would say most of the gaming industry doesn't appeal to me, so sue me if I don't like COD or Gears of War or *insert usual fanboy touched game here*, I like what I like and proud to say it....difference is between me and the rest of the world, I'm not afraid of saying what I dislike and upsetting people either.

        Get a grip on life and suck it up...so what if someone doesn't like the game or console you like/own. That's life, live with it.

        Final words...I think you'll find I've been pretty equal with my bombardments upon both consoles and companies, difference is, I have given the 360 the hard time, it's now time to give the PS3 its share...if you don't like it...tough...I have to put up with your shit everyday

          I don't give a silly shit what company you feel obligated to insult, considering I own BOTH consoles (Oh and it would be awesome if you actually tried justifying that as well). You just can't back up ANY of your half baked "criticism", regardless of your claims. So really, this whole "I speak my mind" bull is not gonna cover you...that's why people in here don't go off on some mindless anger rant and pull some "freedom of speech" card, because people actually know better.

    There used to be a common saying "If you don't have anything positive to say, don't say anything." I'm not indicating that we should hold back on criticisms. It starts with what I considered a simple remark "Kudos to Sony..." and all hell breaks loose. One could make a reasonable argument that Sony is considering their fans by making the PS3 more affordable thus allowing more fans to purchase it. This is good news for Sony. Doesn't mean bad news for (your favorite console).

      I'm not trying to start another argument, but if you read the rest of his statement, after the comma, he's obviously insulting Sony.

      I see no reason to insult Sony or Microsoft over something like this, personally. Like Seeker X basically said earlier, what's wrong with a company wanting to make money, or being proud of an accomplishment(or achievement/trophy, haha)?

        I haven't got a problem with them making money, hell I'm the only person here who has been saying for the last 6 years of his neoseeker membership that game companies are there to make money. I suppose it's the arrogance that both companies give off.

        Oh and seeker, at what point did my last reply come off as an argument, btw only my friends get to call me J. Also if you don't give a damn...stop replying with your thoughts and obviously provoking me into a meaningless argument with you. I do not ask people to agree with me, I just ask people to respect that I have an opinion whether it is good, bad or downright insultive. Fact is, Sony or Microsoft don't give a damn what I have to say and will continue what they are doing whether I like it or not.

          I probably should've read more into your comments before speaking on your views of the gaming world. You do have some pretty good and valid reasons for thinking the way you think, and I think we should all respect that. Neither Microsoft nor Sony are perfect, and pretending like they are is being close-minded.

          Though any company does have a right to be proud of their achievements, though I can't even recall if that was the argument...

        That's where I differ from the rest of you. Normally when a comment is started by "Kudos to..." it is intended to be positive from the person's perspective. Not mine but his or hers. I would argue that Sony is looking in the customer's best interest by making models more affordable to them. When Sony first started with the PS3 they were, in my opinion arrogant. The market responded and took them down a peg or two. They responded to the customer's wishes and sold more units. In business the idea is, if you take care of the customer the bottom line will take care of itself. Microsoft may have been more interested in winning market share by releasing faulty units.
