Some new figures from Microsoft have surface showing that about half of the Xbox 360 users who use the online service are actually paying for a gold membership.

The Xbox 360 team regularly releases figures showing how popular Xbox Live is, but they have always declined to break down exactly how many pay to use it.

In an e-mailed statement, a Microsoft spokesman said the company would not comment on the "specifics of the document" although it confirmed that a majority of Xbox subscribers pay for the service.

Only about half? I thought it would be more.

I can see alot of silver accounts that people create on their console for little brothers or whatever influencing it though.

I thought it would be a lot more as well, but I do personally know five 360 owners that do not use online at all so do not see the benefits of the service.

It's weird to me, as I can't imagine owning an Xbox 360 without paid online connectivity, if I want single player offline, I'd use my Wii.

I don't pay for Live. Frankly I barely use PSN and that's free. Just don't really like to play with or against other people. Even when I play MMOs I tend to mostly solo.

You've gotta remember as well - there's a HELL of a lot of 360's and PS3's that aren't even connected to the internet. If half of those online are paying for Gold, that's only about 1/3 of ALL 360 owners...

    And this is important why?

It is a market that brings in money Arikardo. Can't you see why statistics related to it would be of interest to Microsoft? Idiot.

It's not just that but it is part of the marketing scheme. Convince people that a lot of other people are using the service and it become sort of a peer pressure thing. "Why aren't you online?"

Of course they won't release the specifics of the gold account numbers though. They don't want people to know that out of 17 million live users that only 9 million people pay for it. You want people to think all 17 million pay. And that they're the only user that isn't paying, so pay up losser. Better still would be to convince people that with almost 30 million consoles out there nearly everyone is online and paying. But that would be a lie.

Personally, I buy the 3 month subscription cards since I might get bored with Live and that way I'm only spending $20.

i usually just pay by the month, 8$ at a time. i only really play tf2 and the userbase is dwindling to say the least, so i've been on xbl a lot less recently - even when i do have gold. :\
